Angry Excise / Import Tax (This aint right)

Howzit going fellas, Well just wanted to put it out there, about the import tax in Puerto Rico.

Military will pay for shipping of my HHG and POV, free of cost. But in order for me to take it out of port, I must pay these fees the military will not pay for because Im getting out the Army.

PR Law states: Every soldier whos is returning to PR with a status of retired / seperated from the military will not be excempt from these charges:

Bottom Line I must pay for these fees(tax):

1. 2004 Subaru WRX STI - $8,342.00
2. HHG ----------------------- $3,100 (estimate)

Total:...............................$11,442.00

Then Ill have my car and my House Hold Goods...

I think this is bullcrap, and the military should just take care of this, after serving our country-9yrs of service,,,,,,

Im done now,,,,with this Military crap....

Thanks... just wanted to share...

Jose

Write a letter to your congressman or representative. It will not change the fact that you have to pay but if you make people aware of how much the military is getting screwed they may change the laws(not saying it will be easy or quick). Puerto Rico is a part of the U.S. and you should not have to pay to bring your things home. The Navy payed for everything when I went to Guam and when I came back. I think it's only fair that if you can sign up to serve from PR then you should be sent home with everything you own. That's a pretty **** poor way to treat a veteran.

It sure is a cheap way to treat us. I've been working on a letter to the Congressman because it's crazy and too much for a soldier to pay. I totally agree with you, Hopefully years down the road they might be able to change that law...

Thanks...

Jose

over $11,000. That is stupid. I couldn't come up with that much money unless I sold all my stuff and that would defeat the purpose of having it shipped.

No problem. I'm getting ready to write a letter to my congressman as well. My issue isn't as costly as yours but I'm writing it based on principals. It is illegal to modify your exhaust here based on a law they just passed, they don't enforce it but it is a law that will be a stepping stone for newer and worse laws for aftermarket parts.
