There are two ways of doing it.

1. Compression Test
2. Leakdown Test

Both require special tools.

Compression test is a way of measuring engine's compression by cranking it and using a peak-hold gauge.

Leakdown test is a way of measuring engine's MAX compression by manually pressurising the combustion chambers through the sparkplug hole and seeing how much pressure the chamber will hold before it starts to leak.

Both tests are equally important and require special tools.

bad rings wont make you run rich, just burn oil. id check your o2 sensors, IAC motor/valve,MAF/MAP sensor.

If you suspect you're running rich, the first place I'd check is all along your intake tract...paying special attention to your uppipe then to your IC hose connections.
