...what different traffic lane markings mean? In other words, does anyone understand the difference between a solid white line and a dashed white line? I see sooooo many people merging onto a road and staying in the merge lane alllll the way to the end, even though there's nobody in the lane next to them. I don't get it!

Just one of many things that bug me about Hawaii driving.

dashed means you can change lanes freely. solid means you can't cross.

if you have a solid next to a dash that means a lane is merging on the far side and the side of the dashed can merge over but can't from the solid side.

does that make sense to you?

that same thing goes for a yellow line which means two way road and don't cross over that or you will be heading into on coming traffic.

hawaii people like to stay in a lane until the last minute in hopes of getting two cars further in traffic. then again if you merge early you will probably let someone in front of you at the end of the merge making the people behind you 3 cars back instead of just one(since someone will also merge in back of you). does this makes sense? it does to me b/c i always see it. and if you multiply that by 10 cars in front of you that cut in early that multiplies out to 30 cars back. damn traffic.

People often say its Hawaii drivers but........I don't think its true...a lot of the stupid things I see come from people that aren't from here too

I've just come to the conclusion that 99% of people can't drive...and have absolutely no clue on how to keep traffic flowing.

 

fuggers here in WA cross over the solid white lines and get on the hwy as soon as they can. Annoying as hell. Sometimes I wish I had a beater so I can wack them. When they do that behind me I make like they aren't there and get in.

 

That is so true. Stupid drivers are everywhere, even in NE

 

Yeah but the traffic and drivers here are worse than anywhere else I've ever lived!!!

don't think there are any in montana. then again i really didn't see too many cars on the road as i drove through the state.

 

Now you have got me started! Driving down the Likelike every day to work...it's a solid line while they are working on the median going in both directions. Everybody seems to ingnore the solid line, changing lanes as they please. There are posted signs, but nobody cares. As for Hawaii drivers, they are pretty bad. I've driven on the mainland only in California and can only compare it to there, and we suck!! People in Hawaii hate to use their turn signals (we don't want to know where you are going, just WHEN!). Drivers here overtake you to be in front, not necessarily to go faster (that really irritates me). At least when you get overtaken in Cali, they are gone after that. Okay, I am going to stop now...just my two cents.

 

i was in cali for two years and they still got issues. dumb drivers are everywhere.

i remember some mexicans driving on a one way road the wrong way........at least once a week. makes me ashamed to be mexican. not to mention my friends.......some of them scared the @!#% out of me.

i know in socal, if you cross over lines that you are not supposed to, then they report you to the cops. don't know how that works though. since its illegal to use your cell phone while driving.

 

Well, the good thing about HI is that people actually wave at you to thank you for letting them in (for the most part). In most places, people make their way in and don't even say thanks after you slowed down for them. If anything, people in HI are rather reserved in their driving. Perhaps their rudeness stems from the fact that they expect people to let them in.

 

Ummm... You *CAN* legally cross solid lines - as long as you do it with caution.

Hawaii Driver's Manual (page 34): SINGLE SOLID WHITE LINES indicate crossing them may be dangerous, although you can with caution and good reason (The wider the white line the greater the caution you should take)

Compared to San Francisco Bay Area traffic, Hawai'i traffic is like relaxing Sunday drive. Hawai'ian drivers are actually courteous like markpaco said. And they don't honk the shiet outta you for no reason either. Their driving style seems like a slower paced Kantou (Japan) style to me, and it seems like most drivers in Hawai'i know what they're doing most of the time. Then again, there are a few nutters or folks in la-la-land around, especially in Town and out Leeward (sometimes), but it's not bad compared to a lot of other places I've driven. And don't get started in traffic in Hong Kong Just my 2 cents
