Cut in tire sidewall
I just noticed that I have a fairly deep cut in one tire's sidewall, it's about 8 inches long and goes completely through the outer ply. Can't see any threads in the cut, nor is the inner layer bulging out. I searched the web and got every opinion from "could be OK for years" to "replace right now!".
Anyone have an opinion on this? I'm trying to decide if it's OK to order tires that I want and let it go a couple of weeks or just grab whatever is in stock right now, even if those tires are not my first choice. Thanks.

really depends your driving situation. If its just for regular commute, or daily driving.. you'd be fine. if your going to do autox or events to cause your tires to expand significantly, I'd sugggest you replace it.

I'd replace it Ross...any damage to the sidewall of a tire is a disaster waiting to happen...
For liability reasons, tire shops won't even attempt to repair a sidewall damaged tire...

Thanks to all for the input and advice. I checked my car again and noted that the other tires had the same problem, the outer ply was cracking and starting to peel off. I wanted to take care of it right away so I went to Goodyear and got whatever they had in stock. The tires are called "Eagle Sport", they got decent reviews, but they look like regular passenger tires which kind of bums me out. Oh well, maybe the less blocky tread will not be as noisy as the tires wear down. In any case, problem solved for now, thanks again.

Safety first. My dad had aToyota truck that had tires that had a recall on them due to the tread splitting on them,. Tthe tread decided to come apart in h3 on the way to kaneohe at 60mph. And luckily the truck didnt flip over

Whether or not you replace it depends on how reckless you are with regard to your personal property, your life, your passenger's lives, and the people who drive around you.
