CrimeMapping (See Crime In your Area)

HPD Launches crime mapping technology

( Jai Cunningham KHON2 )
With new smart phones and greater access to the internet this seems to be a marriage made in heaven, imagine getting alerts about crime in your community."Program it so that any crime occurs close to your address that you put in here," said Dave Kajihiro, Assistant Chief of the Honolulu Police Department. "It will send you an email telling you that this particular crime occurred."

Kajihiro gave us a tour of the new site, which is run by a national company.
"It actually creates the map for us. So, we actually feed them the data
through our computer aided dispatch system, and then they plot it for us."

And at an affordable price for HPD, a hundred dollars a month. The current contract is for a year. The website can easily be accessed through the HPD main site, but it doesn't show every crime. "The map only plots these items here, burglary, theft, auto theft, unauthorized entry into a propelled vehicle, UEMV, and the graffiti," said Kajihiro."These are the crimes that the information is no always readily accessible, are we going to evaluate whether or not we're going to put the other crimes in the future, absolutely, but right now this is what we're going with," said HPD Chief Louis Kealoha.

Specific addresses aren't shown for privacy reasons, instead the block of the crime is listed. Chief Kealoha says the new site will help officers keep a better track of what is going on in each individual neighborhood, and do a lot more.
"This definitely will involve the community in resolving their own neighborhood problems. But also this strengthens the bond between the police and the community."

Damn, this is kinda scary! Some things I think are better unknown, but it is probably best to be aware! Especially when I see a Vehicle Break-in/Theft on my street on 11/26/10. Super scary since I park on the street.
