BTW, Richard, did you get the w32.blaster scanner/repair utility? Even though you patched it, there might be a chance the w32.blaster worm still exists in your system. Pretty important since there are OTHER vulnerbilities that w32.blaster exploits. If not, then I'll send it to ya.

Hey, I wasn't initially too worried about that worm when you posted about it, because I converted my desktop back to WIN98, but now that I have this laptop with XP home, should I start safeguarding it beyond the AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm?

Haha, like I said, the new Toshiba cable modems are t3h suck! I have 4 ethernet CAT5 ports in my new wireless belkin 802.11g router as well as wireless capability and sometimes when I'm doing dianostics, if I do get lazy, I just unplug my computer's CAT5 cable and plug it into the computer I'm working on. Then when I return the cable back to my computer, even though the cable modem shows data is being transferred and the CPU light on the modem is on, the net won't appear ...the simple unplug and plug almost always does the trick. If not, then a reboot.

I've got an old Linksys Etherfast DSL/cable router. It's got 4 ports and a spot for a WAN.

I think that I'm going to take a serious look at a wireless router. We're so tired of having that loooong wire laying on the floor going through the living room and the big hole I drilled for it in the Lanai sliding doors.

Thanks a million.....like always.

90% of antiviruses don't detect worms. Unless you DMZ'ed your router, chances are the worm didn't hit yet. Add to that Zone Alarm is a pretty good "software firewall." But yes, I would patch that security flaw asap anyway, like a nasty stain in the no no area, that focker is nasty.

Yup, agreed with Boom. PATCH NOW! Windows update and install all critical/security patches now! (You'll probably have ~27 patches to install, it could take hours) but do it anyway!

Don't count on Zone Alarm to protect you from this one. The blaster iterations are bouncing around and mutating to attack/communicate through different ports. UGLY.

Re-do the procedure, get your router hooked up (like I said, the router now needs to be the first thing that your modem sees when it "wakes up" from being unplugged), restart your system and breathe a bit easier...

I got your physical address right here...

Lets just say I learned the hard way about wireless way back when. Had a wireless network setup and had no mac filtering in place and someone was able to access it. First time setting one up so I was clueless. We used to drive around in Vegas with our laptops and you could get signals pretty often. Funny how CompUSA will sell you a wireless system and tell you nada about the consequences.

Funny how almost all NICs can do MAC spoofing now too, eh? What's the point... *sigh*

Yep, once you think you have figured something out to keep people out something else comes along that can defeat it. Oh well.
