Computer smart guys, help

Hopefully someone will check in here in the next hour or so.

I got a new laptop with XP home and am having some frustrations.

When I plug in the LAN cable (ieee something or other), it says something like 'local area connection is now connected - Speed 10.0 mbps'

When I unplug it, it says 'local area connection - a network cable is unplugged'.

Unfortunately, when it's plugged in, I can't surf the net, get my maiil, nor download ****...I mean music.

WTF?

What are you connecting to the 'net through? Do you have a router?

Does your 'net connection need a proxy server? If so, enter the information in Internet Explorer under [tools|internet options|connections|lan settings|proxy server...]

If not, remove the checkbox next to the "use proxy server" entry...

If that doesn't help, go to the command prompt [start|run|cmd] and type "ipconfig /all". Post the results here.

If you just bought the laptop, your modem may not be recognizing the new MAC address as valid.

Unplug your modem for 5-10 seconds. Unplug your router for 5-10 seconds (if you have one). Plug your modem and then your router back in. Try your connection again. If that doesn't work, restart the computer. You should be up and running now.

Note: Unless you have a router/NAT device - if you switch computers/network cards you're going to have to unplug (reset) your modem every time.

Buy a $60 Linksys BEFSR41 from Compusa to be safer and have a more convenient setup.

Haha Richard got too deep with it.

Pat, do you run road runner? If so, is it a TOSHIBA cable modem? If you have a Toshiba, just UNPLUG the power plug going into it, wait 10 seconds and then plug it back in. Wait a few minutes for the modem to clear diagnostics and if you see the top 2 lights on with the 3rd light flashing then you're set. Try surf the web now.

If it doesn't work, then reboot, and it should be fine.

This is a common problem with the Toshiba cable modems, esp that thinner newer series that Oceanic gives out. The older one was way better though but seemed to break often.

This problem is like this month's second biggest question that I get calls from. The first being the W32.Blaster worm.

I'm going through the cable modem only. I tried earlier to go through my router, but couldn't get neither the new laptop nor the desktop to work. I plugged the desktop straight into the cable modem (or vice versa), and it works fine. I've ruled out a bad LAN cable.

ipconfig /all:
WINS Proxy enabled..................................NO
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS suffix.........hawaii.rr.com
Description......................................S iS 900-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Physical Address.............................09-00-46-A9-03-EA
Dhcp Enabled..................................Yes
Autoconfig.......................................Y es
IP................................................ .....(it's there)
Subnet Mask....................................(it's there, as well)
Default Gateway, DHCP Server, DNS Servers (all there)
Lease obtained................................today
Lease expires...................................today

Then there's some stuff about my wireless network connection

Yeah, it's a Toshiba, but I've been unplugging it all night. I think I need to reboot the laptop more often, though.

Try this:

1. Connect your modem into the NEW laptop (powered on).
2. Unplug modem.
3. Wait 10-15 seconds.
4. Plug modem back in (wait warning light activity to stabilize).
5. Open IE. If page doesn't display hit F5 to refresh.

If that doesn't work post the first 3 octets of your IP address (i.e. 68.98.214.xxx)

It's important that you unplug the modem and plug it back in while it's connected to the NEW computer.

The new computer's MAC address (the hard set address of the network adapter in your laptop) must be the first thing that the modem sees connected to it when it turns on...

If that works for you, it would behoove you to repeat the whole aforementioned procedure but with the router as the first MAC address that the modem sees. Then plug your computer into the router. Then restart or do an ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew command set to get it all up and running again.

Let me get this straight...

It works directly from modem to PC/Laptop but not modem to router to PC/Laptop? Are you trying to get the router working with the PC/Laptop?

What kind of router is it?

I had a pos Belkin 4port router/switch and was a pain in the *** to set up and had problems getting it to actually work. Supposedly that old Belkin pos doesn't automatically detect it. I finally figured out the problem though. It needed the correct DNS to RR which I HAVE NEVER seen before from a router. But it worked. Check your router though by typing 192.168.x.x(check your manual for the ip and the user/pass for it). Trying putting the MAC address that you see in ipconfig into the setting for the router. That might work. Maybe you just got an awkward router.

Anyway I have to get some sleep.

PS. the newer Belkin wireless routers(G-standard 54mbps) works really well and is very easy to configure as it is just plug-put cd-install-play. I would recommend them over the Linksys 802.11g ones(have horrible 802.11b compatibility).

I think he's got the desktop working WITHOUT the router. Nothing working with the router, and no joy on the laptop either way...

I wasn't leaving the LAN cable plugged in when I unplugged/replugged in the mode.

I've got an old Linksys Etherfast DSL/cable router. It's got 4 ports and a spot for a WAN.

I think that I'm going to take a serious look at a wireless router. We're so tired of having that loooong wire laying on the floor going through the living room and the big hole I drilled for it in the Lanai sliding doors.

Thanks a million.....like always.
