Computer Question

My desktop runs all of the time.

The monitor and the HD turn off within 1 hr of leaving it, but for whatever reason when I set it to go into standby after I leave it, it won't come back on by moving the mouse or hitting a key.

I've got it set to hybernate after 20 min of inactivity, but that ain't working.

My guess is that it's the HD spinning. Sounds like a very tiny engine.

Power scheme is set to Home/Office.

Thoughts.

Unless it is on my laptop I never set my drives to sleep. I'll take a look at it when I come down again.

Everyone in Hawaii is still asleep.

I like to know that it's not wearing itself out unnecessarily.

I never turn my computer off, never sleep/park the drives. I just set my monitor to blank after 20 mins or so. In my experience it's very rare to get a completely compliant energysaving system and have it work propertly 100% of the time.

I have ran my computers for years straight, with minimal reboots. My older Linux box ran for over six months with out a reboot, and only went down because the power for the building went out. I have had only one hard drive fail in any of my electronic goods, and that was an external harddrive. Putting the discs to sleep seems pretty pointless to me, and I'm glad richard agrees. I don' think I have ever used the hybernate function on one of my computers.

Since I'm in Hawaii (2.5 Years) I never switch off the desktop (except when needed)

Only the monitor go off after 10 minutes, no sleep mode for the HD; same for the laptop.

Hey, when y'all get back and start to put yours and Chris' plans into motion, you ought to consider starting up somewhere on the mainland.

I know, HI is the original plan but u know how hard it is to start a business there, but its still on the planning stage at this point. Who knows. Are u planning on visiting HI?
Chris may return here for another year- theres a good-paying civilian job offered to him.

I definitely plan on visiting, but there's no way on earth that I could afford to live there. Obviously I couldn't come in with you until I retire which is about 2011, but in the meantime, there's always the potential that I could be a financial partner with you until I get out.
