Never drove an Exedy OEM clutch before, but I've driven an Exedy Stg 1 on a VF39, and it is fine. Since people buy clutches based on torque limits, the limit of the Stage 1 gives it ample room for more torque later on. If I remember correctly, 325~ is the torque range of the Stage 1.

From what I read a long time ago, some people think the Stage 1 is basically OEM with a better pressure plate which makes perfect sense.

I've got the ACT Heavy Duty Pressure Plate w/ the Organic Performance Disc paired with the ACT Streetlite Flywheel and I like it. It grabs nicely and is still very street able still.

I've heard good things about exedy and since they make our OEM's people had mixed things to say about me going with the ACT but since I've put it in I've had no complaints. It chatter's a little bit (which is expected with an aftermarket clutch/flywheel) but it's not too bad.

Thanks! I have that same combo in my sti...no complaints either...that's too much clutch for the wrx though...it's rated for up to a little over 400 tq...wrx won't even come close hehehe:/

...2.0L wrx maybe, but a 2.5L wrx with VF39 on the other hand...yeah you could get close. remember Exedy's ratings are for flywheel TQ, and my stock turbo'd Stg 2 STI is at 320 WTQ (GST's Mustang dyno), which i believe equates to over 400 flywheel TQ...at least 385 flywheel TQ ... so food for thought.

I got the ACT clutch and lwfw too. It's the shiet. But yup plenny people told me go with the exedy stage1, and people still tell me I'm stupid for buying ACT blah blah blah. But the deal I got was good and I have no complaints.

If I remember correctly, this is going into a daily driver. Reliability and fun is key.

Sure a little extra grip is great.
Too much grip and a lighter flighwheel will cause chatter.

Grip + a stock Subaru 5 speed transmission = FAIL.....even with stock turbo and boost levels.

I have been driving Subarus since 1996.
I have turbo'd a few NA subarus, Done JDM STI and WRX swaps, Even played around with the Legacy-GTb twin turbo setup. RWD gc8. Drag racing, street racing, I've even had both an 82 GL wagon and 2000 turbo 2.5 more than 5 foot above the ground off road.

I've been there and done that...and have broken 2nd gear 3 times, first gear once, third gear once, and even somehow fused gears together.

I have many years of Toyota/Lexus and BMW Dearlership Technician experience. I was part of the rework team at BMW manufacturing....BMW trusted my input to help correct problems after testing and with vehicles coming off of the assembly line.

Trust me when I say "OEM clutch". Unless you baby your car or want to rebuild a transmission.

All of this.

For your daily driver, you really dont need anything more than stock.

I have two friends that once after upgrading their clutch, within two weeks fried 2nd gear.

As you know i just put in the oem exedy and ive been really happy with it. Going from a slipping clutch to this, already feel a lot more power

(and they're cheaper too right? lol)

My OEM clutch with 40k miles holds my 324whp and 275tq no problems. And I have the added assurance that when the clutch starts slipping I am reaching the limits of my gearset, not surpassing them.
