I'm gonna bake my lights soon...just lazy.
The key is to keep checking the lights when they're in the oven...don't just leave them there and go play Madden.
I would usually pull them out prematurely and see if the adhesive was melted enough...you really don't need to melt the adhesive a lot just a little bit. You could even use a regular heat gun that you can get for cheap if you're afraid of the oven.
Also, I recommend going to the hardware store and buying a couple of metal paint scrapers...they work great for spreading the thingies.
