Check your belts!

Hey,

Bobby and I changed out my pulley yesterday (Big Thanks to Him) and during disassembly we inspected the belts...both the alternator and accessory belts were hosed! The alternator belt was cracked all over and was split down the middle lengthwise...accessory belt wasn't as bad, but it will definitely be replaced.

I have 46K miles on my Sti...if you have 30K mi or more on your suby, I would check your belts...just pop the black plastic cover off (2 bolts)and inspect them...it's hard to check out with the cover on...mine looked fine until we took it off...

I would hate to have my belt break on me while driving and go flinging around my engine bay...could get real ugly...

Yeah, that happened to my gf while driving. Good thing it was just the PS/AC belt and just lost AC and PS. But that scared the crap out of her!

Can't you bring the belts back to the dealership? I mean, those should last until 90k or so, so even 105k right? Or is that timing belt only? Either way, good that you found out early!

yes you're right regarding the belts. however if it makes you feel better, i didn't change mine until after 60K of hard driving...etc.

The belts held up but due to the engine bay heat the belts crack prematurely. Here is a tip get a flash light and shine it at the area that you can see below the alternator/ac belt cover and look for cracks there. If you're worried take the belt off (mark the placement on the nut and bolt for reference) and bend it inside out and pinch together so that the outside of the belt is touching each other (of course have extra belts before doing this) and if the channels of the belts start peeling away then it's time to change. If they don't then you have a little more life to them. But hey since you've taken them off you might as well change them??? Anyway, if you are going to continue using the belt a little longer make sure that you put the right amount of tension on the belt (you might have to put a little more tension since the belts are stretched). Remember if you put more tension that required the belt will wear faster

Jon,

Would you happen to have the part number for both those belts?

I've been searching all over...I'll probably end up calling subarupart.com and possibly ordering from them...

I want to give our local shops a shot though...may end up calling 5-star...

Thanks in advance,

Brent

shoot. I cannot seem to find my documentation on these... I'll have to check at home or place a call for you. I always get my parts from subaruparts.com since they provide me with the cusotmer service that I think a subaru owner deserves. Locally they take to long. Example of this was my clutch kit. It might be a little cheaper due to the people I know here but It took over a month after ordering it and I still didn't get it. I ordered it from subaruparts.com

Thanks,

Jon

Cool...thanks,

I was on hold for about 10min...waiting for them to pick up...they must be real busy.

I'll call them today and post up the part numbers so others can see.

Thanks for your help Jon,

Brent

Take this with a grain of salt...but

I just called 5 Star and they said:

809218300 Alt. Belt
73323AC000 AC Belt

Not sure why the Alt. belt has a differnt part number...but I would go with subaruparts.com's info over 5 Star...

I tried 3 different times trying to get throughto Subaruparts.com and each time I had to hang up because I had a trouble call...

Local prices are:

$26.78 for the Alt. Belt
$9.34 for the A/C Belt

A/C Belt was in stock but not the Alt. belt...I'm going to give Subaruparts.com another call right now.

Thanks for the information Jon,

Brent

I dont know why i didnt think of this but if you guys ever wanna skip going threw 5-star and pflueger, do what I do and go to vakamon and order your subaru parts threw them, since the subaru warehouse is 2 blocks from them it doesnt take but 10 minutes to get your stuff and your outa there.

well the difference between the two is that subaruparts.com is in tacoma washington and they have access to all the warehouses in the mainland US. they can 2 day ship things to their factility and then get it to you in a few days.

also the pricing for the belts are cheaper at subaruparts.com than what you posted
