Changed my plugs today...

Pulled my copper NGK BKR7E (stock #6097) plugs out after ~6k hard miles. Put a fresh set in gapped at .028". Wow. It's not night and day, and I'm not one to fall prey to "wishful thinking" but I say the car idles and accelerates MUCH smoother now.

I guess these plugs really do need to be changed every couple of oil changes!

I had some interesting deposits on the ground strap - I'll see if my new 4.0mp digicam can take clear pictures. I think it's the toluene at work.

The porcelain was a nice color (maybe a tad whitish) but I didn't expect much different from a modern EFI engine that gets daily driven...

3 (don't know why this one is so clear - I guess just having a 4.0mp digicam doesn't guarantee good close-ups! )

The silver stuff on the threads (and in some cases on the groundstraps) is anti-seize (fresh from my Mechanix gloves!).

#3 has some interesting detail.

The porcelain looks really good to me. Not rich, and thankfully not stark white (lean).

The gray residue on the electrode and ground strap are from the Toluene/Xylene.

The bits "stuck" to the porcelain/electrode that are visible in the #3 shot are a bit worrisome - but if it's aluminum migration due to detonation my UTEC sure didn't pick it up.

My question is, are there any visible indicators that tell you that these plugs were done in?

Nope, but then again there usually aren't.

A widening of the gap (which is only evident most times with a feeler/spark plug gauge) is usually why plugs need to be replaced.
