I've had my hood for 2 years, from STINightfall(Andrew) who had it for a while before that. It was clearcoated(twice IIRC) and when I had it, it was in the sun for 2 years straight. When I sold my car, it had NO oxidation, no wear, no scuffs.
I dropped my car off for detailing once and the guy said he isn't going to machine buff my hood because last time he did it to a guy's cf hood, it scuffed it. I told him mine was cleared and was fine since I've done it before personally too. It came up cherry and even the detailer said that he doesn't understand why there was such a big difference in the quality of hood + clearcoat.
And yes, there is almost no weight savings on the CF, it was just all looks.
Just like any exterior mod, ie bumpers/fenders/lips, if you buy it, paint it, then clear coat it. Same goes for the hood.

Seibon is actually the better CF hood brand. I had a VIS one and it was fine as well but I recall thinking that the Seibon was better quality and actually had a clearcoat already on it whereas the VIS had only the UV coating.
Anyways, yeah you gotta get the clearcoat done before you expose it to the elements. Also, it's best to get hoodpins.

most carbon fiber parts come from the same factories out of Asia. VIS brings in all different types and rebadges them under there line. first thing i would do is get it re-cleared good. then always keep it up with a good wax/sealant.
