Bike Rack Suggestions
All,
Im currently getting into mountain biking as its the closest my wife will let me next to a harley. Dont got a truck and im the only one of my friends who is falling for this. Are you guys rocking the rack that subie offers or did you go aftermarket? if so which ones?
I was quoted $200 something for the subie crossbars and another $200 something for just one rack. Go/No Go
Thanks,
Kevin

Thule and yakama racks run the same your looking at 500 for the foot kit, bars, and racks. if you search ebay real good you might be able to fine a set up for 300 if your lucky.
On another note where you riding.

Thule sidearm is the ONLY way to go for bike attachments.
I have been riding my whole life got my first car in 1997. I have tried nearly every rack possible. I have worked at/managed multiple bike shops and sold or installed everything.
price not a factor:
I have Yakima Q towers, cross bars, and fairing with 2 thule sidearm bike mounts.
My roommate is a manager at the bike shop, and he recently got the exact setup as mine.
However for your vehicle...you have factory mounting options for cross bars, I would use those.
The thule sidearm will mount to those. You will also be able to save money this way because you will not need a fairing with the thin aero crossbars. They are designed more like an airplane wing to almost totally eliminate wind noise while the round or square bars will leave a vacuum behind the bar causing a metric butt-load of noise.
Yakima also now has the whispbar option. This will be similar to the subaru aerodynamic bars.

I'll defer to chad since I know he's an even more serious biker than me, however in my recent research i ended up with this, Thule T2 'sidearm' style hitch mounted bike rack - I live in a parking garage and due to height clearance, had to go with something behind the car; I like how stable it is, can't even feel that it's attached and the trunk has clearance to open (not to mention the hitch will tilt down or fold up as well)
all in all cost was just a hair over 300 said and done, probably one of my best buys yet.
Edit: and yes, figured out the previous owner assembled the front wheel holders for smaller bikes, need to flip them for bikes with longer wheel bases, which is why they're hooked to the frame rather than rear tire (acceptable mounting for something w/o front suspension or w/lockout)
another edit: i think i bought the subie cross bars on ebay new for $75 shipped via parcel post; im not really sold on the attachment, the few threads that they use to hook to the OE mounting points look a little weak to me to be honest; they're load rated for something like 150# according to the sticker

@Loading theres a few methods for the hatch hitch actually; i got mine from uhaul for 160+/- a few bucks, installed it myself (can be done on ramps or jackstands really)
the two popular methods i came across for the hatch were the 08+ forester hitch which replaces the rear bumper beam or the drawtite/uhaul and curt hitches - PM Davin (Zmadness) i think he had one for sale actually for the 08+ hatches
edit: found the ad:
