Big Island Honeymoon
Just got back from a week on the Big Island. My wife and I had a great time. Funny though, I went on Nabisco looking for fellow Subaru owners and found the Hawaii forum was d-e-a-d. I should have checked here!
I saw only three Subarus. A silver WRX in Kohala across from the Bamboo Restaurant, a blue STi in Hilo at the hospital and this one parked near the rental car area at Kona Airport on Saturday.
Anyhow, lots of modified Hondas more so than anything. Gas is $$$. The roads are great for spirited driving.
Couple questions though:
Is Saddle Road really that bad? What's up with the roads to Green Sand Beach and Mo'okini Heiau? And are the cars with the blue flashers on top Highway patrol (using personal cars)?

Last time I went to Kona, I only saw really RICE Honda's, more rice than over here. Most guys had 4x4 trucks. Anyway, did you eat at Teshima's or Manago's? If you didn't you missed out man

Thanks everybody for the well wishes. My wife liked the Big Island so much she is already planning for us to go back this year (or maybe Maui). I am definitely goin' to get down with Subies next time.
Those patrol cars are crafty. Tucked into a b-road you think it's just a regular car until you come right up on it. I thought for sure I was goin' to get a ticket many times. But I only saw one car pulled over all week. And I drove alot. Patrol seemed pretty lenient on speeding.
Also, I read somewhere that one of the rental companies on the Hawaiian islands rents Subarus. Is this accurate? My wife called every rental company on the Big Island and none of them did. The Jeep was great for the offroad stuff put I really wished I had an Impreza for the highways.

Saddle road is not so much scary in itself but more because of the people that know it well.. Heh. I have had some close calls (and some fresh pig) up there back in the day. But then I remember when it was all one lane and we would go up for school camp at the military place up there (forgot the name).
My fav road on the big island is from waimea to the turnoff heading to kailua, but toward kawaihae. Awesome drifting twisties if you can dodge all the malahinis.. Other than that, the high road from kailua-waimea is awesome as well, and often very empty. The red road down puna side is fun if you don't mind catching air from time to time. I hit 140mph a few times on the southroad where you can tie your shifter to the steering wheel and catch some naps. Watch out for cars with blue jars on da roof.
My RS should be there (Hilo side) this June-July depending on when I ship it. Wooooooo... Will be cruising oldskool Celica style too. Wonder if those are still cool there.. Haha.. The old toyboys.
