Beer in Hawaii?
What do you guys drink over there that isn't the typical pilsner crap? It occurred to me earlier how beer culture shocked I might be when I arrive from New England.

You can pretty much get most beers in Hawaii that you can in the states. It depends on whether you're talking about drinking by yourself at home, at a bar, at a restaurant, with a friend, with a hot friend, etc...with your wife or girlfriend..(one day I hope to both at the same time )
I'd say that most locals dont really care too much, but I could be wrong, but we have enough people from the states that tell us how uncultured we are to the point where we do have some specialty places to get a decent variety of beers (at least at bars). Are you asking about where can you get what or what we mostly get?
For the most part, I think most locals here drink the brand known as the "happy hour" special

I don't know, I honestly have no idea what to expect, so I was just asking in general what you mostly get.
I'm coming for a week at the end of this month, so I'll find out anyway, but I guess I'm curious as to what kind of beers to expect at most places (besides bud, coors, etc.), and what kind of beers to expect at those specialty places you mentioned. Now that I think about it, I actually wouldn't mind a mention of any of those specialty places
With the lack of winter weather I don't expect to see beers so dark and thick you can eat with a fork like we get up here, but I'm curious what else there is if anything (IE Asian beers? local microbrews? etc).
Happy hour is good too. I often start by drinking for quality but then wind up drinking for quantity.

From what reid-o posted, those are some good places to start
from my experience from the list, I'd say Ryan's Grill has the Smoothest, but yet sweet, Long Island Iced Tea(sounds to girly but gotta try)
what I drink now is Pyramid Apricot Ale. It is a Malt liquor? w/ apricot to counter
It's an experiment when me and friend walk into Foodland(local grocery store)
like "The Price Is Right" Wheel, we spin it and get whatever beer is on sale, first appearance, rack up our "Makai'" points, etc.
but it all comes down to the basics which we mostly preffer. The green bottles, Heinekin

Steinlager, Heinekin, Blue Moon, Red Stripe, Longboard, and Newcastle is what I usually get from the store. Yard House is like a beer drinkers paradise, I believe they have 100 different beers on tap, some are just way out there and I personally don't even consider them beer, but theres a lot.

ah yeah... we have quite a few of a selection. me personally... im over the whole green bottle thing. after a while... you jus like experiment. so now its red-ronas, which is corona with li-hing mui... or wit grenadine. a local beer i enjoy... is primo. you gotta try it. even though all the OG's say its not as great as back in the day.
