Yo Josh (or anyone else that knows), how far back are the Forestor chassis the same as the 04/05? Like with the Imprezas, the 02-05 are all the same chasis but the sheetmetal is different.
Just tossing ideas around.

the forester is built on the 02 chasis I think. that is why the ideal parts for foreter upgrades should be the 02-03 models from what I've been reading.
the new 06 model will have a chasis like the 04/05

Actually what I want to know is if the 04/05 Forester is built on the same chassis as the (for example) MY01 Forestor.
I'm sort of thinking of picking up a forestor, but parts-wise I want something physically the same configuration as the current Foresters out.

I want to say no it is NOT built on the same chasis
of course all of your stuff will fit (with little or major modification) but the suspension will be different
Jon
best place to go would be www.subaruforester.com

I think being that the Forester is based on the Impreza platform, they should be similar to the Imprezas for the corresponding model years. The Forester came out in 98 and was based on the GC Impreza's platform back then. Same goes for the SF and SG (mine) platforms (the ~2000 and 2003-2005 generation Foresters).
For the SG platform, basically anything that fits '04 WRXs and STis bolt right up with no modifications. '02 WRX parts should also bolt up, some with little modification.

If you were to choose a Forester for a starting platform to modify, I'd suggest you go straight to the SG platform (2003-current). Most if not all things from the current Imprezas bolt in quite easily.
On previous platforms, like the SF, suspensions are different as well as some dimensions, making compatibility an issue at times.
If power/drivetrain swaps are in the plan, going with an SG will save you tons of headache.
You can even go with the basic Forester X complete with the black plastic bumpers and rear drums and go from there. There is no extra weight from luxuries like heated power seats, huge moonroof, etc. I believe SG5 Foresters weigh in at approx. 3,220-3280 lbs. depending on options. Bolt in some STi goodies along with some stealth FMIC and you've got a major sleeper.

upgrade the brakes... keep the stock steel rims, along with all the other goodies....(sleep mode) the forester x is a very fun car to drive even in stock mode- only problem is that my03 and up still have a pretty strong book value here in hawaii....
that is one thing we can thank schuman(dist) for... they ship all the rentals out to the pac northwest(auctions) after enterprise is done with em.
finding a decent 03 can start you around 16g's . . . if you decide the latter you will find them at around 12 g's. . .
