It creates a large ammount of downforce. I don't know how much driving you have done above 100 MPH Norris, but I was near 100 MPH for most of my trek accross the county. There are several threads on I-club about the benifits, including some testimonies from some experienced canyon racers. There is a sweet spot with the STi wing between 80 MPH and 100 MPG where the car stabalizes to the point of feeling like it is completely sitting still. My car makes all kinds of rattling and crap from 0 to 70 or so, then starts to quit down. By 80 the car is stable with no rattling. I think it is because that is the speed the wing is designed for. Above 120 the car starts to rattle again depending on the roads. Either way say you get 1 LB of downforce per square inch on your wing. You have maybe 200 inches^2 so you are getting 200 LBS of downforce sticking you to the road. Those numbers are just theoretical, but that is how it works. Since in a straight line assuming no slippage of the wheels the sti has power at 35 front/ 65 rear it is good to keep the rear end of the car pressed down into the road. Without the wing your car will feel less stable on the road, and in high speed turns. Most of the people that swap trunks do it for looks, I have never heard of someone gettig rid of their wing for better performce. Both the WRX wing and the STi wing have large surface areas, which means lots of downforce. If you look at a mustang wing next to a WRX wing you will see that the mustang one is for show.
