GFI outlet is one with like a breaker on it so when it overloads it blows there.
I know a lot of people are saying its not code but it's only a couple buck more than a regular outlet and its a lot better.
When the fire marshall came he suggested us to change most of ours since he said that will be the new code.
Maybe he was just concerend becuase we have a bunch of machines at one time running

The GFI is a "mini" breaker located inside an outlet within 10 feet of water (ie: a sink). This GFI "button" tends to be red with test/reset noted on it, located directly on the outlet cover. This prevents electrocution by shutting off power immediately if electrical current comes in contact with water.
A GFI is most likely located:
1.) In the bathroom.
2.) In the kitchen.
3.) In the garage.
4.) At the circuit breaker panel box.
all new buildings are required to have it. yours probably doesn't need it and since it is a rental screw them and put in a basic type.

man! im so glad that theres no fire code here in Iraq- our power strip that powers my TV is connected to a 100' xtension cord that's heavily tangled under my bed, up the
wall- across the room using it as clothes line- plug in to another power strip (duct taped) then to another power strip that i repaired from the salvage yard w/ other several mystery appliances plugged to it- finally to a 600w transformer thats also on a 50' extension cord (oh 'twas a 50' its 15' now after cutting out the bad part when we used it to tow the humvee) to 220v outlet with euro to american outlet receptacle adapter!:O
