Amsoil is great stuff
Hey Sti-nkinPhast,
I have been using Amsoil for about 5 years now off and on. I completely regret the off part...period.
What I USED to do was use amsoil for around 15,000 miles and the engine would still be running fine but my voices inside said you better change your oil. I would end up going to a service station and get them to put in some mobile 1 synthetic cause I always thought I was too busy and didn't want to drive with oil that old in it. After I would get the new oil in there things never seemed any better and they actually seemed worse. I would put about 3,000-5,000 miles on the mobile 1 and seems felt even worse still. At that point usually my life would slow down just enough for me to have time to change my own oil again. As soon as I put the Amsoil in the motor I could feel how much better the engine was in the top end (where there is usually higher vibration due to friction).
I did this a few times and after making the same mistake over and over again I finally LEARNED that Amsoil is just great oil and have come to trust it. I have also learned that your protection is only as good as your filter. If the guy that installed it did not use an Amsoil filter I recommend that you go back to him and have it installed. From my experience I found that the Amsoil oil filter keeps the oil 2-3 times as clean, which is why it was just as dirty as the Mobile 1 with a Fram filter with 1/3 the miles on it.
If you want more to chew on....my dad races his 440 Plymouth Duster drag car at the local tracks in southern California. He has made 500+ runs down the track and only changed his full oil 3 times in 5 years. He does change his filter 1-2 times per racing season and tears them apart to check for metal particles and such (none so far). To put this into perspective his Duster has around 700 HP and an unholy amount of torque (he let me start it and now I have a healthy fear of the torque levels his motor is producing). He runs this thing all out every single run and does the 1/4 mile in the mid 10's.
In a few years I am planning on getting the new Subaru Legacy and after it's first 2,000 miles it is going to get it's very first remote oil filter mount system and Amsoil 0w-30 for the remainder of ownership. I will be changing the filter 2 Amsoil filters every 10,000 miles and the oil every 30,000 miles. I don't expect the motor to last any less then 200,000 miles and this is WITH the 110HP per wheel I have lined up for the motor after it's first 15,000 miles (money is the limiting factor here).
I hope you learn to enjoy what Amsoil with do for your car's engine and what it will do for your piece of mind.

Hope this doesn't hijack the thread, but after reading it, I was wondering.......isnt' the weight of the oil you're using just as important as the oil itself? Does everyone here run 5-30, or does living in Hawaii allow us to use thicker oil without the consequences of living in a colder environment?
Getting back on the actual topic...I noticed a big difference in the high rev's as well, after changing from Mobil 1 to amsoil when I put my first 3K on it....been on amsoil ever since.

weight of oil
Yes the weight of the oil makes a HUGE difference in many ways, which is why I like looking at oil comparisons when the same weight is used.
According to the racers I have spoken with they are using the lowest weight possible to ensure every component of the engine gets plenty of protection while providing the least amount of drag. They also recommend this for most street vehicles as they have tight tolerances that require good low weight oil
Of course, if you are towing you want a higher weight 20w-50 with higher levels of zinc incase of catastrophic failure of your oil pump while you are towing.
Not sure if this helps as I am not that great at explaining these things at times.
Anyway I hope that sheds some light,

hey steve, that is a really good story....
I am very happy with my ams oil..... I now have almost 5K miles on my car and I have not changed it since the initial 1K switch to ams oil.... although I do plan to change the filter every 5K so I have 1K left.... and every 10-15K.....
If you Hawaii folks want to get some good deals on this stuff...see chuck at the corvette clinic on ward ave next to the shell station...he is a funny dude and swears by this stuff....
by the way a good friend that got me using this oil drove a TT 300ZX and used this oil; and beat the **** out of his motor which was rebuilt at 100K. The mechanic freaked out because the engine was so clean and had barely any wear on it....and he could hardly believe what he saw............
enough stories....the proof is in the puddin.....
so go see for yourself and become a believer......
