from a "local"
i'm from hawaii, spent 8 years on the east coast-
heres my advice-
1- wear slippers not sandals
2- don't wear shirts saying "hawaii" on them
3- learn the many meanings of "aloha"
4- don't honk your horn in traffic (esp to huge samoans)
(and when someone "lets u in" do the shaka)
5- go to the north shore
6- visit kailua
7- go visit the arizona memorial
8- eat shave ice(or ice shave )
9- visit waikiki @ night and not kalakaua ave. side
10-do not go to waianae (lol! just kidding i have family
there!)
BTW- my aunt drove her car from s.c. to l.a. then shipped to HI.
(if u have that much time)
congrats, and we'll see u when u get here!

I am arriving next week in HI. I just shipped off my cars today with Matson. From the Seattle port it is $952. I am not sure about your NYC location though. I'd expect about $1500 or so for you.

i can't wait to arrive! just a little nervous transporting the scoob. but i'll totally take your advice and watch them inspect the car.
$1500 to ship sounds cool. some places are telling me $2200. were you allowed to keep anything in your trunk?
gdogg - i've done almost everything from 1-10, except visit the Arizona. and shave ice kicks a$$!! Li Hing and Lime all the way!

1.) What you lock in your glove compartment
2.) Seat covers
3.) Trunck compartment secured
4.) No gas ( less than 1/4 tank I believe )

Car Info: 2004 Blue STi
In Feb of 2001 I shipped my wife's Chevy Cavalier from Philly, cost $2K. From NY it maybe a little more. The military shipped my Civic (my previous car) from New Orleans. They are very pickie. If you have some loose stuff in the trunk...they'll give you a box to put them in it and then seal it. Nothing huge tho. That is my few cents worth. See ya when ya get here.

Matson
Here is the website for Matson which ships out of Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, and Oakland. I am pretty sure that your shipper will use them to ship your car to HI.
As for my experience; they want you to have about a 1/4 tank although my STi had like 2/3 tank and my ITR had like 1/3 tank. You can't have anything loose in the car other than floormats. All of the compartments have to be accessible because the DOA is **** about stuff.

- Go to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet or Kam Swap Meet
- Go Walmart at the oddest hours of the night (for some reason, hot chicks are out then)
- Look down on Manoa Valley from Tantalus at night (before 10:30pm or else cops will harass you and check for alcohol)
- Hang out w/a homeless person in Waikiki. (not as scary as you think and they have some awesome stories to tell, just watch out for the vietnam vets on Friday 8pm when the fireworks go off...my buddy took cover)
- Go Ice palace. You'll wonder why you went to Hawaii just to go ice skating
- Go to a UH football game (at least for the tailgate parties)
- Go to most beaches east of ewa beach, except maybe makaha
- Eat at Zippy's
- Eat at Sanoya Ramen on King St. (Open late)
- Go to the Polynesian Cultural Center
- Go for a road trip....even though you can circle the island in one hour
- Eat Shave Ice (like gdogg said), or if you're on the Big Island, "Ice Shave"...call it a "SNOWCONE" and everyone will know where you're from.
have fun!
