from my personal experience I don't think a specific year is more or less of a hassle. the 3 swaps that I have worked on I have come to the conclusion that it is absolutely necessary to have the whole donor car. when buying just the engine, tranny, and wiring you tend to run into small stuff or as I call incidentals that you will need and that will seriously burn a hole in your pocket book. for example headlight and tailight harnesses, abs components, etc etc.

hope this helps. if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

So if I understand, better of getting a whole working 2.5 RS and just get the engine, drivetrain and other bits from an STi?

What he means is, do not do it the way you just mentioned. I have also learned this from experts who have done many USDM GC > STi swaps. When planning the conversion, plan to spend enough money to buy a "rolling" chassis. In other words, you will be buying the entire STi minus the bodywork. In this respect, you will USUALLY have everything you need, if the supplier you're getting your roller from is honest and reputable.

What you said is also true in part. You SHOULD try to at least pick up your host car (GC/GD, whatever year or model and trim you are wanting to convert to an STi motor and drivetrain) in proper electrical form. In other words, yes, finding yourself a 2.5RS, if that is what you want, with a solid frame, paint/body, fully functioning electrical system, steering, suspension, brakes, etc.; but perhaps without the engine, or even engine and transmission, is what you should look for. If it is in that condition, you only have to take the wiring from the RS, and merge it with the wiring included in the STi "rolling" chassis you purchase.

Now, what 4080 said about specific year is partially true. A USDM STi swap will mean you have to convert to e-throttle (drive-by-wire), and perform the immobilizer setup, etc, which is certainly more parts to make sure you receive with your roller, than a JDM pre-v9 STi setup, using the cable-throttle setup found on JDM STi's up until the MY 07 (or 08?) I believe. They held off on giving their home country the new e-throttle setup to work out the kinks with us foreigners, before building their domestic STi's with it.

Hope that makes sense, and helps you out.

That's a lot, good infos in there.
To make the drivetrain fit in a GC, does it required body work like welding for new mount or cut the chassis to make it fit?
