04 Sti clunking noise

Hey guys,

I havent posted here in a while and was wondering if anyone had this same issue down here. I was wondering what they did to get rid of it, did you lube the strut or just replace it? any tips or comments welcomed.

You can lube the tube and noise will come back in a couple of months...
If car is still under warranty, just have it replaced...

cars not under warranty. dont really want to hassle with lubing it. wanted to know if there are other cheaper alternatives to the ohlins and coilovers.

This is a common problum with STI's....Theres two things you can do, Jack up the rear end of your car and reach in between the spring, lift up the sleeve protecting the strut, and spray a good amount of lubricant on the exposed shaft (WD40 or something). I've done that to my friends STi and it worked like a charm. Took only 5 mins from start to finish.

The other thing you can do, but is more time consuming is Replacing Axle Nuts. Here is a full write up on how to do it:

Good luck

Yeah don't use WD40 if you're gonna lube the thingie.

Use an actual lubricant as WD40 is actually more useful as a cleaner.

Agree^^^ I think you can buy the good stuff at sears or something. I just used WD40 cuz it was laying around. Just dont be like my uncle and spray WD40 on your rotors because your brakes are squeeking His 60 to 0 braking distance went from afew feet to afew blocks....filipino uncles, I swear.....

Try checking the nut on top of your strut. If it isn't torqued down properly, you could get some clunk action.

I have the strut clunk on my Version 5's on my GC. I use 5w30 (royal purple) on the shaft and the clunk goes away for a month or so. my 05 sti is starting to do it now after 3 years and 13,000 miles I guess it just finally caught up to me. I have never heard of the nut replacement trick but I will sure give it a try on my 05 sti. but my GC I am 110% sure it is the strut.

Yeah, sometimes, you gotta hold the shaft of the strut piston while tightening the nut ontop the strut. Easier if you have a friend help you out. Otherwise, it will just spin and not get tight. Even some people w/coilovers have experienced this and found a loose nut to be the culprit. It may or not be the answer, but it's worth a check.

tight nuts are good.
