Ok. Update. I read the oil changing section once again in the new version of the owners manual (MY09) I found as a PDF on my.subaru.com. Snippets below...
Although, 5W-30 is preferred...and that is what I was previously convinced to run by the dealership, I am for sure changing over to 10W-40 (Winter) or 20W-50 (Summer). Here are some ideas...
AMSOIL SAE 10W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil (AMO)
SAE 20W-50 Synthetic Premium Protection Motor Oil (ARO)
So for the "Severe Condition" you can use API SL Grade, which the above oil qualifies. So I really can't see this being dangerous for engines under warranty.

Yeah. Even for 10W, the coldest I see is Tahoe. AFAIK, never seen Tahoe below 0 degrees F.
And how unlucky I've been with the two EJ255 in the last 35k, I need more protection!
