Proposed NA setup [please critique]
Now, my plan is to first go temporarily NA with strictly bolt-ons and learn more about the car first; afterwards, if I ever get enough money, I'll do the ej20 swap, (OR if i'm really lucky the usdm sti ej25 swap)
I have a 01' silver sedan rs
Here's my proposed setup:
(already have a ganzflow cai + k&n filter)
Random-tech catalytic converter
Borla Generation 4 headers
Custom-catback + magnaflow exhaust (w/silencer)
I know i won't get the most power out of this setup, but I have concluded it to be pretty cost efficient for the short-run.
I was reading up a little about the Xccerlation cats, saying something about 10hp gain on stock setup.... I went to subarureview but nobody seemed to have it. I was wondering if any of you had it, or knew anything about it? oh and if you do, is it compatible with the borla headers IV? Seemed like random-tech was the trusted brand by most people tho.
Also MRT headers come with its own cats, I'm not quite sure about the price tho, maybe 700 bucks? I guess I wouldn't have minded getting that, if it weren't for the fact that it rusts and doesnt' give that aggressive sound. I couldn't find anything on coating it and if that really helped preserve it.
---------
Also, legal issues:
I live in jersey, and I'm not aware of the car-aftermarket laws and ish....
My car has about 48k miles on it (close enough to 50k), so If i were to put in the random-tech cat, would that be considered legal? I know that the CAI is not carb legal. I'm not even sure if my header cat -custom catback setup will pass emissions, so my basic question what will pass emissions and visuals tests??

the MRT setup is inexpense and gives the best gains for the price but doesnt last as long as other setups with SS but if it is temporary then go with that if you do mind it sounding Honda-ish

That's very close to the setup on my '01 coupe. I have a Ganzflow, borlas, and a custom catback with a 2.25" magnaflow. With an Exedy clutch and flywheel, my best 1/4 mile time is 15.2@87, and I think with a 1.85ish 60 foot time, it can get down to 14.9. A highflow cat would definitely help too.
If you get what you listed, then add some cams later, you can definitely be north of 200 horsepower at the crank, and run sub-15s.

I decided to scratch this project... I figured I'd rather just save up and go straight up for the ej22t swap.
behold the power of the closed deck short block!

Wait so you are upgrading from the ej25 to the ej20t or hopefully the ej25t, If i would were you i would just beef everything up so your ej25 can handle a turbo. I mean Your gonna spend an arm and a leg to get the whole engine setup and all you are going to be able to say is "its an engine out of an sti" Not very many people beside us know the diff bettween the 25t and the 25 or the 20t. I mean its good and powerfull and everything it just seems like you may have some more bragging rights if you can sit and list all the **** you did to a stock ej25 to make it faster then an sti. =D

the 2.2t shortblock is only $1400 from the dealer or less if from junkyard and you cant break it very easily
doing this is much cheaper than beefin up the 2.5
are you buying new or used

I've been doing some mild hwk, basically the ej22t from what I've read so far:
-can handle MUCH more boost than the ej20t, which in turn can handle more boost than the ej257 (sti)
-ej22t = closed deck which means it's very robust
-ej22t comes with forged internals; the only stock thing that really sucks is the gasket? and I read the heads flow poorly, so I was thinking I'd just put in my ej25 stock heads in there.
-the ej22t shortblock = 22b shortblock.... I was shocked and amazed, and ultimately wanted to jump onto this project.
----------
I only know there's one local junkyard here hopefully I can find an ej22t in there somewhere, otherwise, I'll probab be looking to buy a new one.
*sorry this is turning into an aftermarket turbo topic.*

very robust
i think someone one NASIOC was runing 22psi boost from a vf22 and had upgraded heads for 8k rpm and he went 10laps and only spun a bearing and this shortblock was stock with 200k miles on it so even if you have to buy one it is worth the money
