NOS on a subaru
Alright I have a 96 impreza with a 2.2l in it. I am building another 2.2l motor from the block up with a turbo and everything. My problem is that I don't have that motor done yet and won't for a little time yet so I am looking to boost the horse power up abit on the 2.2l motor that is in the car now. The thing is I have heard alot of bad things about putting NOS on flat four motors. From what I have heard it tends to blow the motors up. If anyone has had any luck with NOS or any bad luck with it please reply. Also if any one knows of any kits made just for a NA subarus please reply as well. Thanks

I'd say build up a 2.5 instead, but that's me. Nitrous (please don't call it NOS, unless of course your referring to the actual brand name) has the possibility of destroying any engine theoretically. If you use a lower shot than the block/heads/internals and drivetrain can handle, then you'll get more uses. The more you push it, the greater the chance of having something break. Personally I can't say with certainty what shot of nitrous an EJ22 can handle. I can't imagine using more than a 50-75 shot on stock parts, and even then with sparcity. Wet kits are generally 'safer' than dry kits because the chance of running lean while on nitrous (bad.) is not as great, but they are also harder to install. Point is, do your research. I'll agree with rush though, I'd save the money for your new engine instead.
Williamsport eh? I'm about an hour south.

it can be done and good results have been made. im a semi support of using nitrous, i think its a pretty damn good mod for the money. but you gotta know how to use it correctly or your engine is going to cry, and so will you. i think most people here run the zex wet kit and shots do vary but there was someone who had a 75 shot and ran a 13.9 with just i/e.
do a search at www.rs25.com or just go through the N/A forum over there. i think within a couple pages there was a thread about using nitrous and it was pretty informative.

Who said that nitrous tends to blow the N/A subarus up? I haven't heard that and it's simply not true. Not from all the stories I've read on people having success using it. If you have read about a lot of people blowing up their motors, please post a link.
Zex Subaru kit
Nitrous Express
Nitrous Express Subaru Kit
Perhaps Venom and others. Check around!

if thats what your in to have at it.the only thing i think its good for is drag racing.IMO
im a member of three subie forums,(i only post in this one)i dont post alot but i do read alot.
usability: limited
price: not too bad,$450-$600.cheaper than cams installed but it only last a second or two.
maintenance: on a unbuilt subaru,i dont know.theres not much to read.i've only had nitrous
on 2 cars both 350's with stronger than stock internals.
if your in to racing the 1/8 or 1/4 go for it.if not, then cams are one of the best upgrades.imo

I don't have a fat wallet, and I have forced induction. I think doing one solid mod, like a turbo upgrade is far more reliable and lasts longer than any nitrous kit.
How much do those cost to get refilled ( The bottles) ?

well where i get it filled is $3.85 per pound for nitrous. I chose a venom kit over a turbo kit for my 98 L 2.2 cause of price and scarce use or need for that extra boost. A turbo is a constant boost and nitrous for me is by the push of a button, only when i want it. When i go turbo i'm just doing a swap i'm not spending 3-5 grand on a turbo kit when i get a ej20 swaped in for 5k, but that's just me.

To each their own, I haven't tried living on the bottle yet, so I can't knock it, I havent even been in a car equipped with Nitrous. My goal is a high flow turbo that spools quick, others want a big turbo that puts out big horsepower, and you are a NOS guy, that is cool, I have no info for the nos side. Good luck

if i were to auto-X my car or be a criminal speeder or stoplight drag racer i'd opt for a turbo kit, but id use nitrous to merge onto the highway, youre more than twice as likely to get in an accident if you merge below the speed of traffic....its nice to have that nitrous go just to get up to speed...and hell i'd use it at a stoplight or two, its ideal for that kinda thing...
although...if you use it ALOT it will cost more in the long run
my driving habbits are bad, i stomp that gas just to get my little L up to speed, if i had a turbo i'd have too much fun and waste alot of gas...i'd need a new job just to keep up with gas i'd use :P

Simple Nitrous wet setup = $500-700 installed
Simple FI setup (5-8psi) - $2500 - 5000 installed
Both yield 40-75hp reliably.
If installed and used properly N2O can be more reliable then FI - No moving parts to install, no worry about jammed oil lines or broken turbine blades, plus you can run either system lean and do damage if used wrong.
Oh yeah the baby thing - remember babies suck on nipples too and so do real men (and some women) and there is nothing wrong with that.
