ok, well whatever backfire "really" is, running cat-less will increase the popping/exploding effect in your exhaust system. i am running a cat-free test pipe on my talon and do get quite a bit of popping sometimes. occasionally get a pretty substantial boom in the middle of the exhaust. i think i may be running tad rich right now...
the converter actually heats the exhaust up again after coming out of the comb. chamber. with a pyrometer you can measure the difference in temp. between the pipe before the cat. and after. usually about 180 degrees hotter post cat. kinda neat how that works.
