MAF question

No I mean can it be in the middle of the pipe. A friend of mine got one of those crap intakes off e-bay and it won't fit with the mass airflow sensor installed on it normally so was thinkin maybe he could cut about 3 inches outta the pipe and connect the pipe to either end of the mass airflow sensor so it'll fit. The cut would be in between where you connect the 1st and 2nd vacuum hoses.

Most all "three inch" tubes are not EXACT. Mine needed two silicone adapters to fit properly, one between MAF and tube and one at thottle body and tube- this also allows flexing when the engines rev'd otherwise the tube would just crack and fall off. All intakes are similar to that. Sounds like all you need is the right adapter for your application. If this is still wrong, try to get into detail or post some pics, it's still hard to know exactly what's happening.

MAF PLACEMENT
It won't hurt as long as it's not right up next to the throttle body. But, I do recomend not messing around with the MAF to much as it is a delacate and expensive part. Also, is a cheap mod worth an engine? I don't think the few extra bucks for a correct intake would break you and if you can't afford it then I don't recomend any mod's as it can get very costly for the guys that don't make much like me.

And yes, you can place the Maf sensor where want as long as the sensor wiring connector is long enough.

all the maf does is read the amount of air traveling into the motor...i would not put it right infront of the throttle body dues to the fact that the suction is greatest with no bends in the breather tube.....so yeah i would say it would be fine to place in the middle of the breather tube however not the greatest looking.
