L 1.8 auto fwd
Newby with a bunch of newby questions. I just bought a 95 4dr 1.8 auto fwd. My main question is do I try and improve what I already have or find a wrecked WRX or 2.5RS. I'm just looking for a nice street car, not a full on maxed out show stopper. I don't need 300+ hp. Looking for cost effective mods(bang for the buck). Anyone w knowlege of this area, advice is appreciated. THX

Hey man.
I have a 93 L sedan. I have done a couple of modz to her. I gave her a snorkelectomy and built my own custom short shifter. The exhaust is going to be next. I will be putting a hi-flow cat and a glass pack on. You don't want a nice shiny expensive exhaust anyway if you are just going to beat it up on the Rally circuit. The short shifter won't apply to yours since it's an auto, but I'm planning on putting that up in it's own thread here soon so check it out if you want. Lemme know if you want more info on any of this, and good luck!

Could you list some of the mods you've done to your 1.8...I have no clue where to start (like do those ebay intakes for 20bucks fit the 1.8, or only the 2.2 and 2.5??). Also I was thinking of just cutting the shifter down about 3in and then glueing the **** on. What did you do, I'm sure its a hell of a lot better then my idea. My biggest concern is that I get in the subaru after driving the VR-4 and it's terrible, I forget how slow it really is and pull out infront of traffic, etc....I really need to make this thing a lil bit faster. haha... Thanks ahead of time for the help.

3kgt tt,
Alright man. here's the deal. I haven't done much for modz, but here goes. I gave it a snorkelectomy, in other words I took all the air box crap out and stuck an APC cone filter on the end of the existing intake tubing. Cheap. APC is crap tho. So I recommend anything other than that for the filter part. This made her sound better and may have added a horse power or two.
As for the short shifter I created, I just ran threads further down with a die and then cut it off to match the length out of a 2001 2.5 RS shifter. Then I threaded the **** off a WRX on there and it feels pretty good. A little tighter than the girl's 2003 WRX maybe even.
My next mod will be a high flow catelytic converter and a glasspack where the original muffler is. This should add a couple more horse power. I can let you know how that goes.
Just use your imagination man, there are tons of things we can do even tho we don't own WRXs. Good luck man.

Oh, and the other thing would be the tires. I didn't have the money for wheels, so I'm still running the stock 13 inchers, but I went ahead and stuck some 185/70R13s on there. T-speed rated so they are way better than the cheap 165/8013s she had on her when I bought her.

well I have a 95 with 1.8 and fwd and I converted it awd and put RS brakes on it and it is very awesome, I do have a wrx motor I am gonna put in the spring
I got a great deal on the stuff I got, I will have a wrx for half the cost. I did alot of searching in junkyards and the net for good prices

Start calling around and see if you can find a shop in your area that specialize in subarus. Then explain to them what you are going to do with your car.
If they are a good shop they should be able to either do the work for you or help you find one that can.
ALSO
If you are really serious about modding your scooby then look in to buying the service manual(s) the ones (from Subaru) that mechanics use not the ones that you normally find in your local parts store. The Idea being that the more you understand about the car the better you will be able to explain what you want to who ever does your work (until you finally decide that you are the only one that can do it right and start doing it all your self)

or you can do it yourself the awd swap really isnt that hard, it basically just bolts on, if u go hydraulic clutch then u half to swap pedal cluster but this is already a knock out in the fire wall for the clutch MC, the engine is not that hard either You can even put a legacy trans in it if thats is all you can find just need to use a legacy driveshaft combined with a impreza rear shaft since the legacy trans is a bit longer
