I thought it would just be the head gaskets
Wow where do I begin? Looking for some info from people who have torn apart their 2.5L DOHC. I took out the engine and started tearing things apart to replace the head gaskets, my job has now turned into a serious problem and would like some recomendations on what to do. First, yesterday one of the front bolts that holds in the cam broke and is stuck in there. Tried to get it out with the bolt extracor kit and well no more threads and it is still in there. Second, today (thinking I can work on the other side till I can get the cylinder head to a machine shop) while working on the other side, I was puting the cylinder head back togather with the new head gasket (using my manual) the #3 cylinder head bolt snaped and now I have a peice of bolt in the block. Will a machine shop be able to take care of this? I have not tried to get this one out (learned my lesson). Does this mean I need a new block or will a shop be able to do the work. Should I replace all of the bolts with new ones. I am a bit frustrated and any help would be appricated. I don't need a new engine right? Thouh I am thinking it might be a good ideal so I do not have to experance this pain again. My engine has 95,600 and looks to be sound. Money is a big issue.
Thanks

A machine shop can get them out, hopefully without needing to pull the engine. You won't need a new block, but new hardware would be a good idea. You can buy head gasket kits from a dealer that have all the gaskets and hardware needed I believe.

I did not end up going to a machine shop, but found a local guy who rebuilds suby engines and really knows his stuff. I have been really impressed by this company so far and their williness to help out a guy in need. THE TORQUING SPECS ARE CRAP IN ALL AFTERMARKET FIX BOOKS (HAYNES, CHILTONS). Be carefull out their, subaru fugdes it torquing spec to people other than dealership shops (I'm sure some other shops have in's too.) So far I suggest CCRInc@aol.com Although I have not gotten the bill yet they have asured me that it will not be that much. Everything is being replaced with the factory gaskets, etc. that I had bought when I tried to conqure this project at first. Let's keep this one going, to help out those who are planning to tear apart their engine and not end up in the same position I did Sorry it has been a couple days to write but I have been on a fire. I will post again when I get the engine back in and get my car back on the road. THE TORQUING SPECS ARE CRAP IN ALL AFTERMARKET FIX BOOKS

I will be doing this same kind of repair in the near future and will be needing torque specs that are correct also, so any insight will be helpfull. That sux about subaru and information. I helped do the same repair on a CRX and everything went smoothly with an aftermarket repair manual.

Nice, close advise, Hey what do you think about putting a stock clutch and pressure plate on a lightened flywheel. I don't have too many mods and money sucks right now but I'm trying to make another inprovement and I have that engine out!

Ditch the Weapon R and get the PDM filter. It's only $55. Then get a catback and you've done about all you can. Not much you can do to a NA subaru without changing cams. Who is lightening your flywheel? CCR would know how, but I thought they were anti-mod. If you mean buying a lightweight flywheel, that is cool. Just don't let anyone without a lot of experience hack up your stocker.

The problem with getting the factory shop manual is that it runs for around 350 which is crazy unless you do big repairs all the time. Or you can pay per viewing of the manual online. Rediculous if you ask me. Maybe if it was a Porshe. Has anyone tried calling the parts department and getting torque specs from them?
