Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Crank Position Sensor Replacement

Just a quick question about replacing the crank position sensor on an '04 Impreza RS. I've heard it's pretty easy to do, but the only manual I have to follow is the 2005 service manual. How different are the 2004 / 2005 engines and can I use the '05 manual as a guideline?

The '05 manual would have me take off the front V-belt and then the starter motor to get at the sensor. My only concern is getting the belt back on at the proper tension. Will I need a belt tensioner or can I safely use the method in the manual for replacement without it? Also, will I need any tools to correctly position/calibrate the sensor, or is it just a swap?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

PS. Anyone know where I get a service manual for an '04 Impreza? Both Haynes and Chilton don't seem to make one. Would I have to get one from a dealer?

CPS is really easy to change. Right smack dab in the front/center of the block, behind the belts you'll see the sensor. There is a wire coming out of it. It should be held in place be one phillips head screw.

I have no idea why you'd have to remove the starter. You'll probably have to remove the belts. That's no biggie either. Just feel it out. Push the longest span on the belt with your finger get a fell for how hard you are pushing and take a look at the deflection in the belt. Is it 1/4" 1/2"? Generally with belts you want them tight enough so they don't slip. Too tight and they wear faster.

Thanks a lot for the info. It always seems more complicated reading those manuals sometimes.

Should I also disable the ignition system or can I change it without doing this? If so, is there a best way or could I just unplug the negative on the battery?

Thanks again!

Not necessary, but it's aways suggested that you remove the Neg terminal any time you perform work. It's safer to do so.

All you need is a 1/4" drive ratchet, ~8 to 10 inch extension, and a wobbly 10mm socket.

It was a 10mm. That's right.
