Check Engine Light
I know this is the wrong place to post this, but i dont know where else to post it. I was driving home from work on the freeway, when out of nowhere the check engine light comes on. So i pull over at a parking lot and check it out. A police officer was there by the way, and he didnt even offer to help me, he just kept watching me. Anyways, I looked under the hood for 5 mins and i saw nothing wrong with it. So i drove back to my house, and checked the oil, it was fine. We had a mechanic check out the car a few days ago, since i just got it, and he said everything was fine. The guy i bought it from orderd new spark wires, could it have something to do with that? They arent installed yet, since i havent gotten them yet. Any suggestions would help, thanks.

Anyways, if that's a turbo Subaru, you HAVE to run a minimum of 91 octane fuel. I don't know that it will cause a CEL, but you will definitely lose a crapload of power and your fuel economy will suffer. Other than that, find someone with an OBDII code reader and come back here with it.

Ok, looked at your profile and checked out your pics. Nice car. Couldn't be better looking. Obviously not turbo. Do you have Borla headers or any kind of catalytic converter replacement? Were those spark plugs already changed? Or was the CEL from the gas cap. Anyways, you don't need 91 octane, 87 is fine, but I get better mileage on 91 so it pays for itself.

I don't have anything done to it, except the k&n air fliter, and i havent put the exhaust on yet. As for the spark plug wires, i havent gotten them yet. Hopefully when i drive the car today, the light will go off. If not my friends uncle's run a shop, and he said he could call them to check out the code.

Alright, the light still isnt off. I was wondering if you needed a laptop or anything to read the ecu? Or is there some way where i can have it on my comp, and bring the ecu inside. I'm not big on electronics, the most ive ever done with a car's electronics is installed fog lights. So any help would be great. Thanks.

Pep Boys, AutoZone, will read and clear the code for you. There are 2 evaporative emissions codes that are common... on is the "gas cap light" the other is more of a "ghost in the machine" that some of us have had off and on for years. Also, catalyst inefficency is pretty common... I doubt that's the case here though since your exhaust is still stock.

Alright heres the deal. I went to Autozone, and had them read. There are 3 things wrong with it. First has to do with the fuel part of the car, aka gas cap, so that ones okay. The 2nd one has to do with the manifold, I'm guessing it has to do with the O2 sensor, since i found it he's had it replaced 2 times before i bought it. and 3rd, we dont know what it is. The autozone guy couldnt figure it out. It wouldnt show up in the computer, or in the book he looked at. It was like P0546 or something. So I'm calling the dealer today, hopefully they wont claim it was driver abuse. I will post what happens.
