Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Backfire issues

I have a 2004 2.5RS with a Blitz Nur Spec axel-back and when my dad is in the car he keeps saying that the backfire is not common in all cars and is thinking its a engine problem issue and wants the dealer to look at it, but i told him its nothing, i wanna know is that is it really nothing, is it like that because its a boxer motor and not a Vertical 4.....any thoughts????

If this started out of the blue recently, I'd look into it. Your car might be running rich.

Most cars do backfire, but you'd never know with the factory exhaust on- they have several catalytic converters and resonators and a small diameter pipe ending in a muffer that is designed to keep quiet. I doubt an axelback can do much beside change the sound of the car an let it breath a tad better.

Do you have the CEL on? Even if not, you might still get the the codes checked (might be one pending). Also, goes w/o saying- when was the last time you cleaned/replaced the air filter & plugs?

ps, avoid the dealer for the CEL if you can. Downtown Subaru in oakland gets $125!! for pulling the code now

By the way, I heard it's normal for these engines to emit a backfire or afterfire. You just can't hear it with the stock factory exhaust system.

However, if it just started out of the blue (ex. a couple of months after the new exhaust) then you should check in on it.
