awww c'mon!
well im pissed, i just got my 2000 rs about a month ago, and last night i blew the engine. im still under warranty but the guy i talked to at the local subaru place said he could tell from the way i described it that it would be deemed abuse (which it wasn't, not on my part anyway, i dont know how it was driven before i bought it) and therefore not covered. he told me i should probably just call cobb up because its gonna cost me 6 grand for them to put an engine in. just wanted to know mainly if anyone has experience with the cobb engine packages, i was thinkin about stage 2 cylinder head and short block. i dunno, any advice or info would be awesome. this is my first subaru, after a couple of nissan's and im not sure i have the knowledge about my car yet to tackle this job myself (in fact im sure i dont).

There is no replacement for displacement. I know you have heard this before. Even though the 2.0 is Subarus workhorse, Cobb has 2.5 blocks that can handle anything a wrx motor can. Don't worry about not knowing how to build motors, thats what forums are for. I have a 2001 RS and would never even dream of putting a (smaller) motor.

Hey Subwall, What exactly is wrong with the engine. I can't see what kind of abuse would cause a Suby engine to explode under normal or even hard driving conditions that wouldn't be covered in the warranty. Usually they'll tell you it's not covered when the blown motor is the result of a modification of some sort. Like having enough NOS to blow yourself up!

seriously try a different dealer, there is no way they can diagnosis it over the phone, dont roll over so easy, your car is under warranty and you are entitled to a new engine!

well i went to my local dealership herre today and talked to a guy in the service department. he said that in most cases of blown engines, the way it is handled is that i would need to take the car up there, pay him 500 bucks to take my engine apart, wait for an SOA rep to come make the call, and that the only way it would be covered is if it is manufacturer or workmanship defect.
what happened is i was driving down the highway, not going the speed limit, but not downshifting or anything stupid, just cruisin, anyway, i felt something, kind of a clunk, followed by a missing feel, i slowed and saw smoke pouring out behind me. got pulled over on the shoulder and sat for a while, waitin for my roommate, he got there and it was dark so i couldn't see anything, i thought, maybe it overheated and now that its cooled down i can at least get it off the highway. started it up and heard a terrible clunking noise. thats when i really got under the hood and lookin closely and saw oil all over the inside of my engine bay, had it towed, called the dealership the next day to tell them i was bringin it up there, and he told me to look under the hood first, if i saw rods sticking out the top or bottom of the block then it would most likely be deemed abuse. i looked, and just underneath and to the right of the power steering fluid reservoir, there's literally a chunk of my block missing. and now its at my apt. until i figure out what im gonna do.
BTW i am going to check out a couple of more dealerships

I feel for ya Subwall, it's a hard call. I know you said you were just driving normally, but I wonder if the previous owner did the damage because if so I'm pretty sure Subaru can tell then your out $500 bucks. My question would be to the dealer is if you could pull the motor and have the SOA tech look at it to save the $500. That's assuming you have the means to do so. And checking out more dealerships is a very good idea as well.

If you threw a rod, for the most part, the only way that is going to happen is by overrevving or running out of oil. The most likely reason is that the piston seized causing the crank to keep rotating and break the connecting rod throwing it around. I am surprised that it even cranked again. But if you bought it the day before I would tell them to f*ck off. I would assume the gave it to you fairly dry(oil or coolant) or it had a crazy oil leak. I would stick it to them. Throwing a rod due to neglect is almost impossible. Like you would seriously have to be going like 75 in 2nd. And with the subarus that is not possible, because of the cut off. Sorry this is so long, I just hate people getting screwed because the dealer doesn't want to fess up to their wrong doing.
Hope this helps

edit:
sorry 75 in 2nd is what would have to happen with a 3 speed. Sorry I was thinking about when I threw a rod in my 65 dart. It was ****ty but what can you do. I didn't throw it from over revving. The builder put the piston in there crooked and it seized and broke the crankshaft.

nah there was oil in it, i changed it myself right after gettin the car and put in some royal purple (same thing previous owner used) anyway, got a hold of the other owner and he told me that at 9k miles he went through a puddle of sorts and messed up the engine...therefore he had a new engine put in at 9k miles. but he had all the services done at the dealer he bought from so im going up there this weekend, hopefully they can help me out

Don't let the dealer scare you. I just had to have a short block put in at 59,985 miles. It was consuming 4 quarts of oil every 1k miles. After 4 months of messing around I took it to a reliable dealer and they hooked it up right away. I didn't have to pay any money to have them look at it and wait for SOA to look at it. Then last week ironicly my friend has a 01' and he was driving around as normal as can be and his motor went on him, as in totally died. He got it towed to the dealer that was giving me hard times with my motor and got it fixed without paying money. On a side note, we both needed our motors fixed and while they were on the lots they both got broken into and stuff stolen. How weird is that. The dealers are an hour appart, so it's not like some kid in the area liked stealing from subaru's. Anyhow, take it to another dealer, there in almost no way that they can prove abuse. If they threaten that tell them you're gonna talk to your lawyer. You're still have a warrenty no matter what anyone says. Plus if he already had the engine fixed then they must have put something in wrong and that's why it blew again. That's basically what happend to my friend. Good luck
