98 2.5 RS is overheating
Hey, my engine was over heating yesterday. I was driving in the streets with my AC on and after about 10 minutes from my house, the air from the vents got pretty warm and seemed like my AC wasn't working. I looked at the temperature gauge, and the needle is on hot. I pull over and let the car run on idle for a few minutes. The temperature doesn't drop, so I just turn off the car. I looked under the hood and there is no fluid in the cooland reserve tank. I let the car sit for 10 minutes and turn it back on and start to head back home. The temp gauge starts at normal temp, then as I start driving, the temp climbs back up and almost hits the H, then it goes back down. I get home after a few hours, get some coolant and fill up the radiator and the reserve tank. I filled the reserve tank up to the max level. I turned on the car and let it run alittle bit and the fluid in the reserve rose. But tonight I looked in the reserve tank and after having the go to work and back. I checked the fluid at 10 pm tonight and the fluid level in the reserve was at 3/4 the min, so I lost 1/4 from the max line. I dunno if the fluid just recirculated and then there was less or there might be a leak some where. I'll go check tomorrow night if there is less fluid in the reserve. Any suggestions?

Yesterday, I checked the level. At noon the reserve was below half so I thought that I was leaking some. But at night, it went back to 3/4. The same as the night before.

when the cars warm, the fluid in the radiator expands and thus flows into the overflow. However, when it cools back down, the pressure decreases so it takes some of the fluid back into it. This is why they put the reservoir there. I hope thats what you where refering to. I don't think its a problem so long as it never goes below min, and doesn't run hot.

If you search for 98 RS and overheating, you will see that most of them blow headgaskets when the miles start to get up there. This isn't necessarily what happened, but a possibility with your car given the history of these things. Might want to check that out. Could also be just a dead thermostat giving a false reading.
