97 2.5 overheated, can it be saved?
My 97 legacy 2.5 blew a hose on the highway, got very hot before the driver (not me) noticed. It died as he was pulling off the road-will not restart. Engine turns over but sounds like it has lost compression. Timing belt ok, no water in oil. Oil smells burned. Car has 120,000 miles. Need to get at least another 100,000 out of it. Any good advice would be appreciated. Any chance this engine isn't fried? Should i rebuild or replace? Costs involved in either, etc, etc,..... Thanks in advance for the help.

Be perpared to spend.
Option 1. File case with Subaru of America - Head gaskets are known to be bad on this EJ25 motor. Attempt dealer repair under warranty.
Option 2. Rebuild. Here is a good resource for engines http://members.aol.com/CCRInc/RebuiltSubaruEngines.html
Option 3. Sell as is or trade in and by a Honda.
After going through this I would recommend 3.
