Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

95L issues

I've got a 95L Coupe, EJ18 with a 5 speed. When it's really hot it loses power, but the thermostat needle doesn't move. Also, it has some trouble starting, just recently, should I change the plugs or is there something else I need to do? I don't know anything about the electrical system of this car so any knowledge would help. Also, is there any way to make an EJ18 have 150-200hp without a turbo? I can be more specific with the problems later.

Try replacing the cam and crank sensors, I had trouble with starting issues and had those replaced and it helped alot. It could just be the starter, but its usually its the sensors. Could be the coolant temp sensor as well, but replace the cam/crank sensors first to see if that helps.

No you cant get 150hp without a turbo. Well, maybe you could, but it would take new heads (probably something JDM), alot of block work, alot of wiring, and alot of money.

There's no way you'll get 200 hp out of that 1.8 L without some sort of forced induction. You could put nitrous in your car... but the cost of parts, installation and maitenence issues would probably be almost as much as a turbo if not more.

It would be more than the cost of a turbo kit for sure.

Considering some of the later model 2.2's, circa 2000-2001, made 145hp stock, 150hp is damn easy with a 2.2. Unless of course you mean wheel HP.

Cheap and easy upgrade for 2.2L, probably gets 25-30 hp
1. Vishnu crank and alternator pulley
2. Triphase piggyback chip from Next Level Racing
3. Heat shielded cold air intake kit from Xcceleration

Here's my latest problem that I just discovered last night. Changed my plugs cuz I drive faster than I should and rev it to 5K whenever I can. In the process I discovered that my car consumed almost 3 out of 4 quarts of oil in the last 3K miles. Changed the oil (3 quarts oil, 1 quart Lucas Oil Stabilizer stuff) and noticed a leak that looks like it's coming form the front of the engine, maybe the top of the case? Still having hesitation at start, even after the new plugs and oil, any idea what the hell is going on? Is it a temp sensor, O2 sensor, what is it? Also, any help on the oil leak would be appreciated.

I the air filter and all that are fine from what I can tell. I have a friend with a PDA that will read OBDI codes, anyone know if I need to download specific software for my car (he uses it on his Eclipse), and if so where I could get the software? Once I have school paid off (in 4 months if I'm lucky) I'm just gonna import a front clip from a JDM Sti, maybe a type RA. Anyone got any suggestions on companies to buy one from? Right now though I just need the EJ18 to be reliable and get good mileage. Anyone have any recomendations to get the most mpg out of it?

Change the PCV vavle. It might be clogged. That much oil is bad man. I would get it professionsally looked at.

front seal needs to be replaced if oil is coming out of the front of the motor

i would think if you have hard starting under cold conditions it would be the cam and crank sensors but if it is hot starting problems like my 95 it most likely is the coolant temp sensor

and having no power when it is hot well it is a 1.8 and not having much power to start with and then take 10-15hp away because of heated intake charge and you end up with just enough to move the car at high speeds and if you have the cams off timing that hurts you even more(the motor makes lots of low but NO high end power where it had some before)
