Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Question 95 2.2 idles low??

when i start it cold it idles up to 1400rpm then it drops as it warms up down to 400rpm hot.
and while driving when i come to a full stop its at 1100rpm (its an automatic) sometimes, mostly in the 400rpm range. once in a while it will hang about 900rpm.
any ideas? the car sat for 14 months before i got it.

I think you have a couple extra zeros in that post my friend. I'd say the 900 rpm sounds right, but 400 is pretty low. IAC control maybe?

Are you sure it's 400 RPM. I don't even think the tach goes that low. The first mark on my 2.5L is 500 RPM and my car idles around 600 RPM when hot.

Besides, what's wrong with a 400 RPM idle, uses less gas.

yea 400 rpm it was on the pin
it wont stall but it comes off the line slower and i get some belt sqeeling
the average idle speed for any car should be about 900rpm with the engine warmed up
sounds like your cars off a little

I also have the same problem on my 98 outback sport. Sometimes when I drive it, the idle will drop to 2-400RPM at stops. It has never died, and the problem seems to come and go... I'm stumped

I should have mentioned that I have a MT, and it probably really idles around 650 - 700 RPM, but I've never had any problems with it at all.

I don't think there should be any belt squealing at any speed. Do you happen to know which belt it is? Could be too loose or too tight? I know sometimes overtightened stuff causes more friction but I've never heard of this in a car.

just in time for inspection last day for my temp. registration. idle is about 600-650 that works for me. from what ive read you have to adjust the idle with the ecm.
