I can't tell the difference. Most new cars are "fly by wire". No real reason for a throttle cable when the whole car is contolled by the computer anyways. Maybe your friend is just a hater for trying to talk you out of a STi. The Acura TL is fly by wire as well if I am not mistaken. Pretty sure BMW as well.

What your friend is afraid of is incidents like the mini-s, it has a fly by wire system but has a hesitation when the gas is pressed. That is what most mini owners complain about. It is new technology, it advances, and the fly by system will be less problematic than the wire system. Your friend is what we call a "purist" and there is a place for them. . . . we call it south eastern texas

I used to own an '02 WRX, and now have an '04 STi, and can honestly say that I prefer the feel of the DBW system on the STi greatly to my old WRX.

The throttle feels more accurate, more sensitive (in a good way), and I know that I won't have to keep a throttle cable lubed.

Also, the MINI Cooper S had throttle hesitation issues not connected to the DBW system, but instead had to do with a need for updated DME/ECU software.

i guess i count since i am a real STi owner.
my wife has a 2003 wrx and i have a 2004 STi - the dbw is definitely a lot better.
responds quicker. one of the benefits of having a throttle by wire system is that it sends feedback to the dccd. (along with the brakes and the lateral gsensor)
(info i learned while selling these bad boys)

where i feel its most benefit is when i am downshifting- it revs up nicely- i had to adjust my driving method slightly-

Coming from an 02 WRX to my 04 STi, I can tell you I personally prefer the Drive by Wire system in the STi. The STi has smoother throttle response and it consistent. As a bonus, all of the aftermarket engine management systems work just fine with the DBW.

Plus, there's less clutter in the engine bay without the throttle and cruise control cables crossing over everything.
