New subaru owner. 06 WRX, tuning questions.

Hi I just bought myself a new 06 WRX, im familiar with them because my father has an 02 WRX but I don't know a lot about the aftermarket/tuning aspects of the car. I couldn't quite afford an STI, and well its my daily driver so I wanted something a little more practical.

My question is this, what can I do to customize it, increase the power and make it handle a little better without voiding my warranty? I don't want to get too crazy like I said its my daily driver, but I want to modify it a little. Also what parts from the 04-05 models will also work with the 06 like suspension and exhaust. Thanks for any input.

Hey, I have an 06 WRX TR as well, First things first Turbo back exhaust, and Cobb stage 2 accessport. I have these mods plus a couple others and my car is insane im makein some videos this weekend ill post em up here later an you can check it out. Suspension wise, Its easier to screw up the handeling then it is to make it better. some guys might say springs some say full coilevers, i would wait till you have the money for full coilovers and then have set up to your driving style. im still waiting for someone with an 06 to try the cold air intake jus because i read they were bad on 05 wrx an below but now that we have a 2.5 power plant i wonder if its good. Also do TONS of research let other people experiment, if you dont want mess ne thing up let other people do it first and learn from ther mistakes!.. welp thats my 2 cents good luck to ya

Congrats! There's not much you can do without voiding the warrenty besides changing out the tires, and brake pads. As far as I know most of the exhaust and suspension parts carry over. This is what I would do...
1.) Whiteline or noltec steering rack bushings
2.) Kartboy shifter bushings
3.) Cobb rear swaybar and H.D. mounts
4.) Turbo back exhaust
4.5.) Real Tires
5.) Cobb Accessport

^^^^^^^I agree with the stuff above. I'd go for a quality set of tires, a TBE of your choice, engine management (the Cobb Accessport possibly protuned if you get the chance, STi pink springs, up-pipe, sway bars.

With that stuff you're looking at about $2800. I can promise it'd feel like a new car though.

06'S don't have a cat in the uppipe
they have some kind of air pump or something.

Don't forget guages, the factory option may not viod the warrenty.

I inquired with SPT about the Performance Guage Pack, and they don't offer it with the '06es. I guess the only option is to go with the factory-option column-mounted boost gauge. Bummer.

06 clock pod area is different

I think the reason that SPT doesn't offer a guage pack for 06's is that the Airbag readout (On/Off, based on passenger seat sensors) is in the clock pod and Subaru probably doesn't want to help you take that out to put in a guage pack.

Looks like the Autometer dual meter bezel would still work, tho.

Cobb accessport is not necessarily warranty friendly at least not according to the service department at my dealership. Depends on what you do with it, and if anyone outside their service depertment knows about it.

After looking around it appears that exhaust systems and springs from the 04+ will also work on the '06 is that right?

Get a set of Defi BF Ambers and mount them on your A-pillar. You can keep the clock (and the airbag apparatus) and they look much better as they are manufactured by the same company that makes the stock STi guages. Perfect match.

^^^ I agree ^^^ but don't forget about suspension, tires, wheels and breaks. IMO, this is where the WRX suffers the most. It is too soft and breaks are too week to track the car. Look at the Roto wheels - good wheels and not terribly expensive. As far as suspension. Tein Flex coilovers with EDFC, Perrin Front and Rear adjustable swaybars, Cusco, whiteline or Perrin endlinks, Perrin PRS. Upgrade breaks... Brembo makes good breaks but if you are going to upgrade there are way better ones out there for track applications.

If you want big power but more lag (drag applications) go with a FP Red. Mine spools up by 4000 rpm as compared to the 3400 of the green.

Oh and don't forget ENGINE MANAGEMENT!!!! I would recomend an EcuTek reflash with the Utek piggyback. This will give you massive tuning possibilities coupled with multiple maps, flat foot shifting, launch control and data logging. Makes me get a stiffy just talking about it...

Final thing - Be careful pushing too much power through the 5 speed tranny. In a perfect world you could swap for the 6 speed in the StI but the swap will cost about 7K. For about 4K you would swap a race tranny into her that would handle big power but the straight cut gears would whine like a mother! Kinda cool though.

Idiots

He asked a simple question about light modifications and you send him instructions on how to build something faster and more expensive than the STI he declined to buy.

My advice is to talk to Cobb. They focus on reliability first. Them then specific what you think you want the car to do better, and they can advise accordingly.

Lol thats the idea, if I really wanted a 300 hp car I would have had to made the extra payments on an STI. I was actually asking more like what fits on the 06s since most of the parts I see say 04+. For example will springs for an 04+ also fit on my 06 wrx? and what exhaust applications will work 02-03? 04-05?

I wasn't that guy in here saying "wErd im teh nOOb how to I get 400hp" but thanks though.
