My 270WHP Christmas Present
In order to get myself into the Christmas mood, I always start my shopping by buying something for myself (try it, it works). This year I decided on an exhaust for the STi. With the windows down at the track, I could barely hear the stock system and nearly forgot to upshift on more than one occasion (sounds like a good enough excuse). Having come from a heavily modified WRX wagon (250WHP / 340 crank HP), I knew the importance of having the car properly tuned as well.
I had many good experiences with Shiv and Vishnu and made the decision to use his tuning talents on the STi. I also bought the Vishnu 3" Turboback exhaust. It's a great system with excellent fitment and build quality. The system utilizes a high flow cat and a bellmouth downpipe designed to lessen the dreaded STi boost spikes.
I put the exhaust on this past weekend. It took me longer to get the stock stuff off than to put the Vishnu on (damn heatshield!). I'll have a complete write-up on my site this weekend: http://mikeegan.stormpages.com/stihome.html
I was very happy with the exhaust note. My deaf **** can hear it, but it doesn't drone on the freeway. I drove it for a few days before my reflash appointment and it made some noticeable power gains.
But the true power gains laid in the reflash. The attached graphs compare my STi with exhaust as a before and my STi with exhaust and reflash as after.
So, to sum up: 270 wheel HP on the dyno dynamics dyno (stock STi dyno's at 220 wheel HP on this dyno). This is on pump gas (crappy Kalifornia 91 octane) and no other engine mods. Torque looked to be about 280 ft-lbs. Boost is right around 17-18psi with a nice AFR of < 11.0. This car pulls like a freight train now (only much, much faster ). The power is much more useable as well. Partial throttle boost response in 6th is more than enough to pass on the freeway.
Let me thank the folks over at Vishnu for once again doing an excellent job for me.

I may have that 220 number wrong, but that's what is stuck in my head.
I'm making even more power than my wagon did now, so I guess I can stop right here.

Thanks for the write up Mike! And yep, stock STi's put down 215-220whp on our dyno. Stock EVOs put down 195-200whp. Stock Porsche 911/933 Twin Turbos put down 300whp. 'Nuff said

All kidding aside, I am very happy with the results. Too bad I have to wait until March for a (dry) track day. Thunderhill is calling my name right now. Of course that does give me time to decide on suspension...
...Who was I kidding when I said I wasn't going to mod the STi?
