Engine specific but litterally like a knock on a door though in my limited experience with knock higher pitched than your average door knock.

rod knock and detonation "knock" are entirely different sounds, det sound more like a tapping or even ticking, a rod knock is just that

I don't think you can get rod knock until you bend a rod so thats definitely not ok.

Piston slap is just becuase the components are loose when cold so they shake a bit making noise, at least what i understand about it.

Pinging is like dropping bb's into a tin can.

Rod knock is also caused by worn conrod bearings. The rod shakes around either the crank or the piston wrist pin. To understand what I mean, loosen your wristwatch 2 or 3 notches and shake your arm back and forth.

Piston slap is more common with forged pistons, which expand more when hot. This means that when they are cold, there is a larger gap between the piston and cylinder. It should go away as engine temp rises, gradually fading out within a few minutes of startup. Your explanation is correct, I just wanted to add a little detail.

BBs, nails in a blender, popcorn... anything that is a harsh metallic discordant sound.
