sorry to say but its most likely detonation or could be wastegate flutter which some get confused. its easy to get confused if you have never heard them seprately. detonation kinda sounds like bb's in a can.

From what I've experienced and read most people have experienced det in the 3.5-5k range.
Someone really needs to get the reflash working in Hawaii......or you can be like me and just run a costly mix = to about 94 octane. I havent had det ever since

The ecu's on the STI having been giving pretty much everyone det problems. Subaru reflashed a friend of mines quite awhile ago when he talked to me about the problem. No det or knocking since

Detonation is most likely to occur at or around 4k RPM's while going WOT uphill in 4th thru 6th. (at least that's what I remember from my research prior to taking delivery...pretty sure it's accurate though). Good luck man - let us know what happens.

I had the reflash done and it made the det stop for awhile (also felt to take away a bit of power). The temperatures in So. Cal were really high a couple of weeks ago and it started doing it again. I guess I got to spend an extra $10 a tank to pump the octane up; I heard that Torco is good for this. http://www.need4speedpower.com/

i'm new to the forums. but ..
has anyone thought of using a water&menthal/alcohol injection? from what i'v read on a large number of forums, it is a tried and true solution to detonation and provides the ability to lean out the AF mix (better gas mileage, somthing i'm shure we are all thinking about at this point in time).
plz, no flame ....just my $0.02
