Question Benefits of an Oil Cooler

I've had my "04" silver on gold STi for nearly two weeks now and already wanting to add some mods. I'd like to add an oil cooler for starters and was trying to explain the benefits of it to my wife. Maybe some of you can explain it better than I.......Help! Thanks

It helps to keep your oil cool

The extra cooling will help protect your engine during heavy loads in hotter temperatures. It is really effective, if you find your oil temps raising to dangerous levels a lot.

The only problem I've ever seen with an oil cooler is on cold days. Sometimes (like it gets up here in Reno in the winter) it'll get way too cold for the oil to ever reach operating temperatures. This can be easily avoided with a thermostat controlled bypass valve, so that the oil cooler is shut off during cold mornings.

Other then that, they are a very good safety measure.

I strongly advice an aftermarket oil cooler to anyone who lives in an abnormally hot climate or who races endurance events. Keep in mind that the cooler it keeps the engine the more power you'll have (theoretically) because you'll be further from knock and your ECU will not retard your timing when your running your car hard for longer times.

Better oil cooler kits (like Turst) has a thermo, so there will be no oil temp issues. So, yeah, benefits of oil cooler is lower operating temps and higher oil capacity. Trust cooler ads nearly 1 quart of oil. For example, on my car with Trust cooler and ARC high-cap oil pan, my car now uses 7 quarts of oil. That Porsche oil capacities on a EJ207.
