Car Info: 72 Beetle working on STi engine swap
2004 STi, how many liters?

Hi all,

I am looking for a complete STi drivetrain for my 72 beetle. I want somehting that can run around 400 streetable horsepower with an additional 100 on tap with nitrous. I plan to send whatever I buy as a base engine to a tuner to have it done right. I have been looking at Cobb Tuning, not sure if they are a good choice for me or not, I have no experience with Sube tuning. I found an 04' STi drivetrain that is local, and a crashed 05 STi also. Do these 04 and 05 cars have the 2.5 liter engine or are they something else? Any info would be really helpful.

Thanks

Dave

All U.S.-market STi Imprezas have the 2.5 liter engine.

What will you use for a transmission?

Thanks a lot for the info. What about the Japanese Domestic market STi engines? Are they 2.5s also?

To start I am going to use a beefed up bus gearbox and later I plan to work on swapping in the entire 4WD system once I get more time to design a new front suspension and make sure that the ring and pinion can be flipped in the rear diff somehow. Thats a project though.

wow that bug will be nasty if you get everything running right.......oh and to answer your question about the jdm engines, they use 2.0 motors. the usdm is the only market that has the 2.5 motor....unless something has changed recently.

Nope nothing has changed. 04-06 all have 2.5 stateside. Japan and other countries have 2.0. WRC does not permit anything bigger then a 2.0, with that being said, that will be a sick crazy car. 72 Beetle with AWD maybe 400 WHP, wow!!!!!!!

Sand rails often use EJ20 and EJ25 in a rear engine / rear drive setup, check with that crowd for trans. info.
