Does anyone know how well a STI engine will run on the 92 Octane gas that's available in the US? If I need to change the computer to change the fuel maps, what brand would I go with? I have a couple front clips that I got from Japan, and I have the full wiring harness, ECU, and everythign that comes with the car. But I dont know what I need to do to make it run well on pump gas here in the US. Can anyone help me???
thank you

It will run fine!
The ECU is very adaptable...unlike the USDM ECU...
If you pour 5 gallons of Tolulene in there before you fill up...then you will be pumping 100+ octane...and it will really be a go go vroom vroom!
JDM hi oku is only about 95-96 octane on our scale...it is 100 RON...
Good luck...

I have a ver. 7 motor also but I am awaiting the release of the new Autronic PnP ecu before installing it. I personally would be leary of the sti ecu properly retarding timing when it was programed originally for higher octane. You could use some stand alone ecu, but I do not know of any available systems out there that will allow the control of the AVCS function which is more important than most people believe as far as performance is concerned. But this is just my opinion though. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I beg to differ with the general consensus in this thread.
The stock ECU is adaptable, but it has its limits.
I'm running RON98 in my JDM STi, and it's giving me 'problems'. The engine will knock under heavy load and/or above 5-6k RPM WOT runs. I use a KnockLink to detect the knocking.
A friend of mine with the same exact car reports the same results (again, using KnockLink).
Just ask Alfriedsq about this 'problem'. The JDM ECU likes nothing but pure RON100. When he put RON98, knocking was apparent as well.
My car, with very minimal mods, will knock if 6k RPM sees 1.1bar or higher (sometimes in a hot day, 1.0bar will knock too).
Can someone tell me what's the difference or how to convert between RON rating and octane rating?
The best solution for you IMHO appears to be Ecutek. Ask Shiv or whoever can tune using Ecutek to bring down the timing (stock JDM ECU timing is very, very advanced).

STi motors go for about USD4000-5500. After all, that is still a stock OEM motor than CAN be upgraded. For same ~ USD5000 you can get a motor that is built to the extreme, will handle 35psi and 150 shot of NOS and rev to 9000RPM and blow the doors off almost anything out there.
Maybe its too crazy for some people, but I think that if you were to spend that much on a motor, why not get more for your bucks.

P.S. And, it will love your pump gas.

I have access to STI V7 Engines with Variable Valve Timing and 6 Speed Manual Transmissions for 8500 USD. I believe they come with full wiring harness and ECU. They have only been factory run, and have never been installed in a car. If you are interested, let me know. I'd be more than happy to sell you one. Thank you for your time.

It would take a little bit of work, but it would pass cali emissions.
and as for the gas. You just need an aftermarket ECU to cover that. All you have to do is rework the Fuel maps to whatever gas you have available to you. (All I have is 92 Octane, which I tuned my Link systems for it, and my car runs great!)
I recommend the link system.

lucky i stumbled upon this thread, i was thinking about implanting an STi engine but did not know if it was worth the bucks.
i will be waiting eagerly for your reply alex, and also, does the engine you are refering to with the 5k$ price tag fit in a 97-01 RS?
