Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Actually, if you were to be able to make the ENTIRE trip without stopping at 80 mph, your engine would love you. ~4000 rpm is the turbo's sweet spot, where it's thermal efficiency is the highest, and there are no temperature fluctuations to mess with clearances internally. The only problem is, you're going to use about 25% more gas than if you drove 65-70 all the way.

Even in 5th gear, he's well past the boost threshold at 80mph. At 65 he might drop below it.

I just got back from an 11 day trip from bay area CA to SE AZ and back in our stock WRX wagon. Lots of fast freeway driving - mostly 80 MPH or more. Some mountain driving, some fast driving on rural 2 lane roads and some time on gravel.

Mileage was always over 20 MPG with 23-25 on freeway days.

The boost gauge was getting to 0 at just over 80 MPH in 5th. You aren't making the engine sweat at 80 MPH.

When I drove from Texas back to California, I managed to pull 30mpg on about 2 tanks out of 8 or so fillups (I was tracking my mpg per tank, and I averaged about 26 the entire 2100 miles). This was driving through NM, AZ, and NV. Don't sweat it. I drove for 14 hours a day each day (except for a stopover in vegas) and the car handled it beautifully. Only mod is an EBC set to about 1.10 hkpa peak. Once you get to highway speeds, you are rarely getting into boost except to pass someone. I just stuck it on cruise for the long, flat sections of highway.

Once you get to speed, you wont be in boost anymore. I had my cruise control set to 75mph. When the car starts to go uphill, boost begins to build some depending on how steep the hill is. But once it levels out, it goes into vacuum.

I stand corrected, which sucks- this means you WRX guys are probably getting better freeway mileage than I am!
