Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Question Will Ported Stock WRX Intercooler Elbows/Hardpipes Cause Engine to Run Lean?

Hi all,

I just read a post/thread about porting/knife edging the WRX's stock intercooler "elbows"/hard pipes and was thinking of trying out this mod. However, I'm wondering if it'll result in leaning out the engine or have any other adverse effects on performance or reliability.

My intitial thought is that opening up the hardpipes' passages can't hurt, but after mulling it over a bit, I'm not sure now; The stock ECU is so finicky about intake tract mods (ECU & MAF sensor no likey K&N filters, cold air intakes, or even after MAF sensor intake tubes, like the ZEROSPORTS)...that I want to get some feedback before I take the plunge and start Dremeling away.

Btw, I also read a post by someone who did the mod, and he claims that his WRX was getting higher EGT's (lean condition?), so that has me second-guessing the mod too.

Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

CL

I wouldn't think there would be adverse effects with this mod. I know that replacing the OEM pieces with Samco or Vishnu intercooler hoses add a few horses without problems. They add power by smoothing out the airflow path.

Problems usually arise when the airflow is modified in close proximity to the MAF sensor. I don't know where the safe area begins, but the intercooler hoses shouldn't be a problem.

Where'd you read about this mod?
