Why is WRX turbo silent?

Actually, i don't think doing doing the silencer removal or silencer chop increases the sound of the turbo, it just lets you hear the intake sounds, just sort of the "ssshhhh" of air being sucked in through the airbox, but that's not really the turbo, that's the same sound you'd get on about any car with an intake, turboed or not.
To hear the turbo your best bet is probably a catless downpipe. Most catless downpipes are made of much thinner metal and dont' have all of the shielding of the stock pipe. And if it's catless (which most are) you're not only seriously increasing airflow (and HP/Torque #s), but you can hear just about everything the turbo is doing.
And yeah, intakes and the silencer removal don't seem to help at all on the performance end until you're pushing a LOT more boost, then mabye an intake is worth your $$$, but only after some good tuning. But i did the silencer chop and can hear the intake sounds a LOT more than stock (since it removes teh stock resonator/silencer jug), which sounds cool, but indeed doesn't do squat for performance.

Turbo.....
I have the TurboXS stealth back system. 4"Downpipe, highflow cat, and Midpipe mated to a Stromung axle back.
Catless uppipe as well. The massive stainless downpipe lets the turbo sing. It can alsways be heard over the exhaust.
Some people think I have a aftermarket BOV. I get compliments on the sound.

yeah, most CAIs pop out the airbox hole down into the fenderwell. There are also a number of short-ram intake kits that just sit right there in the engine bay. I'd recommend not messing with the stock intake though unless you're running more boost and ready for some tuning, otherwise you end up just running a little lean and being out $150-200. Intakes are a great upgrade for most cars, but on the WRX they don't seem to do much good unless you've got a beefy setup.

Usually I wouldn't give a crap... but this certainly has turned into a thread meant for the Record Book of Ignorance Filled Threads.
I'd bet all the people claiming you don't get more turbo and BOV sound if you remove the silencer either haven't done it or drive a manual like my grandma. Geeebus.
I've done this on like 5 cars and you can TOTALLY hear the difference. And no, its not just "wooshing air through the intake". Have you ever removed the silencer on a NA car? Have you ever put a CAI on a NA car? You don't hear that whoosh... not even on cars with almost twice the displacement. Geez. Its the freakin' turbo. You guys either drive like grandmas or you have hearing problems.
And Captain Ned, you crack me up the most... you're not able to hear and see at the same time ?!?
Remove your resonator. Its easy and gives you an effect that makes you proud to have the best substitute for displacement. It doesn't cause problems. And if you're not like these ninnies whining and moaning about things they most obviously know nothing about, then do some real modifications and make that turbo sound really worth your while.
jason
p.s. Ned you know why they cover the turbo sound? So 50 year old men who know nothing about cars don't get worried that something's broken. That's it. There is NO good reason for a silencer. In most cases it doesnt help nor hinder performance. Its to hide the sound to make the car more attractive to the general population. Hahahah " a sound Subie's engineers went to great lengths to remove"

Jason's got a point, folks... I'd trust him on this one.
If you listen closely to a stock WRX (a la mine ), the turbo spool is veeery subtle: kinda like the guy sitting next to you in the movie theater who needs to fart but is trying to keep it quiet so that it ends up becoming reeeeaaaally long like "phfffffshhhhhhhhht". It really does indeed sound better with the silencer off though. It's what I intend to do after my warranty expires (cuz I'm a wuss haha).

this is what i did and sounds good
I too also agree with jason. Most of the general public want a quiet muffler, intake, etc. If they hear a noise its off to the dealership.
This is what i did. I read of people drilling holes in the snorkus/silencer. What i did was hack sawed the silencer just below the elbow. The reason i did this was to keep the ram air intake piece so if subaru looks under the hood its still there and also now besides the air frome the ram air it also get air from the fender well. I cant speak if its quieter than with it just removed but when i took the car out for a test drive you can defident ly hear it . If i get on the car its less noticeable than if it spools slowly then i hear it better. The wrx was way to quiet for my taste when i bought it so i did the above mod and got a turbo xs axle back for now to give it a lil noise back there. I am operating on a budget so nothing to fancy for now. I plan on shortly getting the ecu reflash from cobb and a up pipe and downpipe also. I know this thread has been discussed at great length already but this is my opinion
have fun

Removing the resonator was the best first mod I did. Turbo sounds sweet now spooling up. Theres one cool thing the 4eat's can do that the 5mt's can't. When you give it gas from a stand still and hold about half throttle (giving about 8-10 psi of boost) and just hold it. While accelerating in first gear there is not much, but when it shifts to second, still holding the throttle at about half, WHOOOOOSH. Major turbo air suckage. Keep holding throttle in same spot, turbo starts to taper a little, then it shifts to third and WHOOOOOOSH. It all only takes a few seconds to actually go thru the gears but it sounds sweet.

A note for Choku Dori and others worried about warrenty and silencer. To get the sound and be able to back to stock quickly, I took off the flat intake, and then took the nut off of the inside fender that is attacked to the snorkus bolt. I then just pushed the silencer back into the fender well so it is not attached to to the intake. I put the flat intake back on. THere are a few parts sort of hanging now, and the snorkus is still attached by the bolt inside the fender, but I now have the "sound" and can put it back to stock in about 2 minutes!
