Who rebuilds IHI turbos?

Aloha,

Anybody know a reputable shop that rebuilds IHI turbos? Specifically, I have a VF30 that needs a new oil seal and could use a good once over...

Thoughts?

Mahalo!

What makes you think you need a rebuild? Many IHI turbos cannot be rebuilt.

Tifosi77,

Thanks! That's a great price on the VF30 from Gruppe-S! If worse comes to worst I'll consider that.

I've heard that the VF30 isn't so hard to rebuild as it doesn't use BB (the whole center section doesn't need to be replaced) and there are rebuild kits out there for it. I just have to find the parts and/or the shop to do it!

DeliciouSpeed,

My 5 day/500 mile old VF30 started puffing smoke out the exhaust. It would hold boost fine, but I think it had a defective oil seal during manufacture.

Pulled the VF30 out, re-installed the stocker and the car is running like a champ.

Aloha,
Richard...

You should bring it back to where you got it then. No way you blew it.

It's going to get fixed under the good graces of the seller (even though it's not technically getting "warrantied") so I'm really happy.

Got this back from the local turbo rebuilder I brought it to:

I removed the turbine housing and found that oil is leaking through the seal. Doesn't look like much oil is leaking but in my opinion enough is leaking to create the blue smoke. I recommend a rebuild or replacement. Please letme know what you would like to do.
Thanks,
Kirk
Looks like I had a defective turbo with a leaky seal.

The "kit" to rebuild the turbo was quoted to me at ~$150.00 and the labor @ ~$200.00 so $350 for a rebuild with no shipping (which is a big factor as I'm in Honolulu, HI). Shipping the turbo USPS with NO INSURANCE was $30. Insurance would have bumped it to $40-45 and both ways that would be $90!

Mahalo for the responses,
Richard...
